Cosd
General pigeon shooting. Have been shooting just over a year now, and been using cartridges based on lowest price rather than performance, Rottweil, Rio and OK Game. I want to try out something better to see if I notice a difference ( I know they all drop em if you hit the target). Called the gunshop just now and this is what is on offer: Hull Pigeon Special 32 6 £157/1000 Lyalvale Express Pigeon Special 30 6 £173/1000 Fiochi Sporting Pigeon 32 6 £160/1000 I know this has been covered many times, but any opinions, do's and dont's are welcome; Or are the ones I have been using just as good. I'd like to find a cartridge and stick to it I think. Edited July 1, 2009 by Cosd
Catamong
They're all as good as each other, but for that price, I'd go for the Fiocchi, they're a great shell. Cat.
Whitebridges
If you want to go really top end try RC SIPE 32g 6 (actually a UK 5.5 - 2.7mm) at a whopping £200 per thousand. Edited July 1, 2009 by Whitebridges
Cosd
Thanks guys. £200 is a little more than I wanted to spend though I have been told in the past that Sipe are a good cartridge. Fiochi is the one I have heard least about, but a recomendation by Catamong is highly respected.
Windy
i picked up some Fiocchis the other day......havent given them a proper outing yet, but they seem to have plenty of 'grunt'! Edited July 1, 2009 by Windy
Harnser
The cheap shells will kill just as well if the target is in the middle of the pattern . The first excuse you hear when we start missing is ,these cartridges are **** . Harnser Edited July 1, 2009 by Harnser
Greenhunter
Unless you are using a S/A cartridge quality is less important. I've had the occasional blip with the cheaper end due to build quality and therefore not ejecting properly Some people get used to the 'faster' makes, others don't get on with them. Find one you like and stick to it. GH
the hitman
I have always thought that putting the word pigeon on a cartridge is an excellent marketing ploy . The cartridge companies know most novice shooters will start shooting pigeons with little cartridge knowledge. I am using maionchi prima shells 28gm no7 , at £140 per thousand they kill pigeons very well indeed.
Guest topshot_2k
RC SIPE 32g #5shot Hull and express pigeon loads are both good, gamebore clear pigeon are also worth a look
The Burpster
Another 1 for RC...... I dont use anything else now....

Always check the velocities printed on the packing or check the shell makers websites for ballistic info. There can be a huge difference in some shells. Heat and humidity can make a noticable diferance too..... In my experience anyway....
groach1234
Lyalvale Express Pigeon Special 30 6 £173/1000 I would give them a miss because i had problems with ejections from my silver pig as did my brother with his ultra light deluxe when we were using the the special game so i assume it is the same with the pigeons i am a far bigger fan of the Eley VIP and i feel the leave less crud in the barrels as well. Floating Chamber
I would always go for Lyalvale Pigeon Special. *It is close to my heart as I developed this load for the company. Still have the original test results for the first batch which was loaded here in our kitchen! (Much to the chagrin of my long suffering missus!) Thanks for a great load, I have recently gone through a few and they kill rabbits stone dead, don't foul up the bores too much and seem reasonable on the shoulder! Didn't mean to insult one of your creations suppose it is personal preference. My dad swears by his special game and wouldn't use anything else but they didn't get on with me so well George
Vince Green
Just wanted to say a word for Hull Cartridge Company who's cartridges I have been using for years off and on. I didn't want to see them get left out of the discussion because they are good and they are British. I'm not knocking Lyalvale becuse I have never used them but 32g beats 30g all other things being equal.

I dropped starlight's due to not being able to get them for Lyalvale super game in 32 & 36g........A decent game load are pushing the 180-200 quid mark all over these days. I was always thought you shot better with cartridges which are slightly transparent anyway?
dodeer
Just bought a few thousand RC4 28g 6 felt wad. Managed to get a very good deal and having shot some at fitasc targets I know that I wont have any problems with birds upto 45 yards away. Having shot, admittedly not that much, Hull, Express and Gamebore, I prefer Hulls so bought 2000 Fibre 32g Special Pigeon. They just seem to kick less than all the others. As many have said before they all kill if you put them in the right place. To be fair though, it is worth getting 25 of each and patterning them with your gun, chokes and shoulder! That way you will have some data upon which to base your decision and not just a bunch of highly experienced, dyed in the wool, bordering obsessive, albeit very nice, PW members opinions ;-) cheers,
