00 buckshot for hunting

Hi guys. My fields have got loads of foxes in, is 00 buckshot or SG good for foxes.

Last one I shot at about twenty yards using number 2 shot

Someone i know uses buckshot with a tight choke on fox with good success,but me personally i use 42g BB's cause they're cheaper and still do the job.

Unless very close range, I have found SG's to be useless, with large gaps in the pattern. BB's are much better.

I agree with Steve, I have some SGF and found them no good so there is part used box sat here doing nothing.

BBs - 0`s and around that area seem to do well !

I was speaking to a fellas who used to use 3s and 4s out of a full choke apparently it killed them stone dead at 30 yards if hit in the head.

Biggest I've ever gone on fox drives is 4's, just because I had some left from Hare drives of years previous, my reasoning being that if they'll stop a running Hare they'll do the same on foxes, which they do. Many foxes are killed on driven/rough days with nothing bigger than 5's or 6's, but unless you're in close then they're not ideal in my opinion.

I use either 42g of BB (Eley Alphamax), or I've also got a few old wildfowling shells, which are 50g No.1 shot.

 

Both drop foxes perfectly out to 30 yards or so. I'm sure they'd do the job at considerably longer ranges, but I'm a firm believer in ensuring a kill, so I restrict the range like that.

 

Unless foxes in an area are absolutely paranoid, getting within 30 yards of them should be pretty easy. Learn their routes and timings, and then just set yourself up, and keep still and quiet, an hour or so before you expect them to turn up. Let them come to you.

In my opinion its junk and not required. You need to get inside the ribs of a fox to kill it with as many shot as you can, not bust three pellets clean through. Although I don't take first shots at this range no.3 lead should do this at around sixty yards and do it with a darn sight more pellets. At the end of the day you cant scare them to death with what it says on the wrapper. I did some testing with the 10 ga recently and buck size lead, it was pants on patterns once you got over say 25 yards range and 25 yards no.6 will likely be guaranteed to spoil a foxes day big time

50g 1's for me, plenty of pattern with 1's and will drop foxes clean at sensible ranges.

Fox fur ain't as hard to penetrate as goose feathers and threes will do fine in lead. Ones in steel.

As others have said, buckshot patterns are terrible beyond 20 yards or so. I've never had a single fox run on when hit with 36g BB (eley alphamax) but probably #1 or #3 shot would be a better size for pellet count vs penetration. They wouldn't notice if it was a 50g magnum load either, but you certainly would. That said, if your fields are safe to launch buckshot in and you're serious about reducing foxes, a .22cf would seem a sound investment?

Last few foxes I've shot with my shotgun were with max game 50g 3's before that I shot them with 63g ( I think) ultramags made by fiochi number 2 shot although i haven't seen any difference once they've been hit so from now on I'll be sticking to the max games!

PLEASE PLEASE don't think about shooting a fox with 6's I can't believe people still think you can, yes a 6 will kill a fox if he's got his head in your lap eating your pot noodle so would a 410 or a carefully aimed coconut " i've dropped a fox at 60 yards with a 4 " BULLSH** Do you really know how far away 60 yards is! I've had the missfortune of shooting a fox, half dead, in a barn starving to death with it's hind quarter rotting off because some D*** thought he could "drop a fox at 60 yards with a 4" shooting a bolting fox at 10 yards with a shotgun is one thing shooting a fox at 60 yards with a shotgun is a compleatly different ball game give the animal the respect it deserves use the right tools for the job, do you realise how quickly 6 shot runs out of steam and how wide your pattern is at 60 yards, use 4's for a bolting fox by all means but when you see him trotting across a field no.1 or BB will do EVEN SSG is the ethical choice. Oh, and by the way the fox in the barn was despatched with a 6 but it was 3 foot away and eyeing up my pot noodle.

The few times I've seen it used, it had terrible patterns along with the occasional ricochets and a truly impressive range.

If your contemplating using it I would think very very very carefully about the backdrop.
