My lounge is 550 sqft with a max height of 15 ft well insulated and i run a 5kw stove which does this and the rest of the house too. the performance figures of the stove are misleading (IMO) as they refer to its burning performance not use able heat. I have the fresh air supply flued direct to the fire (closed system) so I don't have cold air entering the house to feed the fire. Its efficiency remains the same at 81% but provides much more warmth than otherwise.

Out at 630 cold and wet to arrive at my new Perm at about 730 with trusty guide Bumpy22 off here. As we are getting out of the truck I have to take a moment to admire some unusual vegetation when we are surprised (well i was) by a couple of deer trotting behind the truck along the track. All a bit rushed so we let them be. Then Bumpy spots a Munty just across the first field. All excited now and raring to go Up into the first field less than 100m from the truck there is a Doe standing in a hollow in the field. Head held high she is scenting the wind, we are the wrong side and stand to admire whilst she decides which way she wants to go. We leave her there and sett off through a small copse to the next field. A small group of four are standing on the other side upwind . We stalk closer using a dip in the hill as cover and get to 120m or so but we are a little high and the back stop is not so strong. We sit and observe for maybe 30 mins. I struggle to keep my fingers warm I have to carry the rifle and the sticks today We work out that there is a mature Doe amongst the Bucks. We need to improve the back stop and reduce the range. Back we track staying low dropping behind the ridge down the field and back towards a small copse (where I had set of a cam a few days before) between us and the target. Aware that I may be on camera i tidy my jacket a little and smile. Now we are 80m away laying prone, the bucks are out but the Doe is staying in cover. We wait and the time passes. Its very cold, very wet but I am too focused for cold hands or to notice the discomfort. Eventually after maybe 30 mins she shows herself enough for a shot. Bumpy checks i am happy to take it and I squeeze the trigger. Noise and recoil result in me missing the point of impact. I lift my head from the stock and she is off in an arc behind the hedge . We wait and wait, I am sure the shot was good. After what feels like a lifetime we go to see where she stood looking for evidence but there is no trail. I thought the shot was good. Bumpy goes off to look over the field and I am left to search the grass but nothing, maybe i missed Down the field I go and I am asked to check the field edge. Nothing. 'Better to have missed cleanly than to have a runner' I say but feel dismayed that I could miss from so close. Then I see the Doe lying in the ditch Bumpy had found it 10 mins earlier Now the hard work begins. Amazing what you can do with a tikka . What better way to spend a Sunday morning. So much to learn. A big thank you Edd.

Not a big fan of the Royals being a republican at heart but happy to see the money spent on what is our heritage and cultural heart. Would like to get a look round one day.

Good post this Jamie. The pics help a lot to understand the issue. Thx -

Its a great approach with an air rifle as you can be static during the shot. For shotgun it will work but numbers are likely to be small as you are reliant on passing traffic seeing it, rather than with a crop / stubble where many birds want to be there.

+1 Exactly but try having that discussion with my local team and its a waste of time. Also they don't know the extent of the land. Often looking at just the main farm without counting the extra lands bought in. I have totally flat land cleared for 308 and and hilly land cleared for 220, how does that work?

Good for foxes i reckon but not sure about the pics after

Just taken out a lease on a farm for stalking. Want to try to manage it properly so first task is to try and work out the numbers on the land and come up with a cull plan. Bagged half a sack of apples and off in the morning with the trail cam to set up in a likely place and start to find out whats about. I have seen 14 in an evening when after foxes and saw 5 when walking round after pheasant. Also know there are Boar in the area so who knows. Any ideas on how to estimate the numbers would be appreciated.

We had four off a small piece of land (not even a farm) maybe 10 acres the other week. Farmer has baited it and seen another four there this week. Off out on Wednesday night to see if we can bag some more. It looks like the smallest scruffiest bits of land see the most action?

I met his dad for dinner. He gave me a copy of his book to be a Daniel. What an amazing guy. So many stories to tell, his conspiratorial view of the world was akin to that of PW contributors.

Its tough no doubt about it. Parents night at school gets even harder. I looked at it this way. I wanted my kids to be happy with mum and her relationship to be happy. I wanted the step dad to care about my kids. Kids are not here for our pleasure, rather we are here for them. Life is hard enough for them and my job was to be there for them when they needed me. Mine came out the other side stronger brighter and more confident. They have not only their dad but a step dad as well.

I have a shooter king coat and that has a demo of it pulled through a hedge by a truck. It's worked so far against gorse and the heaviest rain but I have only had it a year.

How do you know it's been cleared? It may be the case it has been used for this caliber before, but on an open ticket. I have a farm that was not cleared and had it cleared whilst I had a .22. I was told by the FEO that they clear to the max safe calibre so as not to have to go back out. Now I have a variation for .243 so just to be safe I check with FEO if it's cleared. They tell me it was only cleared for 220 (?) so need to do it again. This land is large, very hilly remote with minimal roads and foot paths. It would be safe to launch an RPG let alone a .243.

Fortunately I am busy when this stuff is on.
