  1. thanks for all the replies folks, old is definitely the way to go but is also why folk do not sell them very often. Perhaps when things ease a few more used ones will be offered.
  2. bolt the two together and make the best fixings you can in the walls and floor so the cabinets appear solid. Cabinets only slow down determined thieves, you cannot ultimately stop them. Any lock is only a minute away from being open with a diamond disk on an angle grinder so all you are required to do is show due dilligence and prevent casual access. I have not heard of any loss of firearms nor prosecution for not affixing a cabinet properly. The more space you have the less chance of damage so if you have space for a 10 next to a 5 do that, there is not that much difference in cost in the long run of gun ownership. I have foam in the bottom, foam in the sides and foam glued (araldite impact adhesive) over all bolts that connect my cabinets and safe. I have one cabinet where I keep only those guns that I need relatively quickly for a humane dispatch call out, guns that you use most regalarly can be organised in the same way. Dreading the day I need another cabinet as will inviolve infiltration to the mem sahibs clothing wardrobe which will more require more planning than d day
  3. without a doubt some of my fondest memories are taking other folk out for their first clay, rabbit, pigeon or deer. 1984 turned out to be frighteningly predictive, I fear we are rapidly heading towards making the film 'Idiocracy' a reality.
  4. therein lies the crux of the matter, the risk of doing something 'essential' is not being managed at all. My mrs does any supermarket shopping and she reliably informs me that many folk are still not wearing masks and definitely do not respect the 2m space, many do not use the hand sanitising facilities available and many are in groups of 2 or 3. Millions of people meet in supermarkets every day at great risk to the NHS. If this was being managed correctly then I would agree that we should then consider the risks of smaller meetings of folk but until this situation changes it appears to me that meetings of smaller numbers of folk that are properly managed are far lower risk to the NHS than the irresponsible folk doing 'essential' shopping. I have heard game shoots have been far more responsible than supermarkets at managing the spread of the virus. It is at best unfortunate that our powers that be seem incapable of seeing where the risks really lie and making up rules that reflect this rather than ambiguous rules open to interpretation. I cannot comment on folk that go to clay grounds as I have not been to one in several years but from the sound of it they could do better.
  5. love it, presume you have a suitable gas mask handy, I remember the results of sprouts on my old lab
  6. Given a choice between going to a supermarket and meeting at a shoot where 2m distancing in the open air is respected, I am pretty sure which one poses less risk. Just as anyone who goes lone deer stalking, pigeon decoying, rough shooting, walking, cycling or canoeing represents zero risk to either themselves or their 'bubble' (a phrase that is clearly rubbish as at least one person in every bubble either goes shopping or receives a delivery of shopping)
  7. slow baked salmon tarragon sauce pommes lyonaise buttered sprouts cauliflower calabrese lots of prosecco think I have earned a few brownie points
  8. Glad to see the rules on puppies from Ireland, North and South. Everyone seems to be thinking about this in terms of the inconvenience to humans whereas the dogs welfare should be first priority. If it slows down the abuse from non-reputable puppy farms then this should be applauded. I am sure that reputable breeders will find what is needed mostly in their usual modus operandi. The 'deal' should have been done a year after the vote. As usual politicians have managed to spin it out for 3 years with their noses in the Brussels trough. A disgrace really as we are now having to cope with new requirements and covid combined.
  9. Happy Christmas everyone, just had a flurry of snow so it may be white yet.
  10. A pest controller pontificating about being humane and lying (or being extremely ignorant) does pest controllers in general no favours at all
  11. Finally, been after this one that had been hanging around the chickens for the last couple of weeks. Why it decides to show itself at midday is anyones guess. Adult sow so a good un to get rid of. A 2 in cartridge in the hushpower .410 and the neighbours do not even notice. 252
  12. that works for me. I interact a lot with the police on humane dispatch call outs and always find them perfectly normal and pleasant. Good manners cost nothing and if you have good cause to travel then I am sure you would be on your way quite quickly. It is usually folk that have something to hide that bleat on about civil liberties and human rights.
  13. how do we know she is not positive, she could have killed someone. It is supremely Orwellian that folk stick up for someone who should be setting an example. Now some folk will think that it is fine to do as you please as long as you apologise afterwards. She should resign forthwith. Rant is because I particularly dislike anyone who is as clearly anti-shooting as she is and who will happily see the great estates beggered and then broken up for no other reason except prejudice.
  14. I lifted an old oak cattle feeder (to get to the rats) and although the legs and back were fine I strained my right shoulder, 4 years of constant niggle until a mate said try the turmeric capsules. 6 weeks later and the injury had healed - quite a relief. Other folk have said that they might not be so good if you take them long term so I have not used them since. One farm owner I know uses them on and off, she has arthritis and sciatica. I took 2 capsules a day - eb item number 53356254611
  15. I have been looking out locally but no luck for a while now. I will be patient though as I had a Clarke cheapie once that was 2.5 degrees out of perpendicular so only good for not much
  16. so folks, where is the value please? will be mainly used for mortices/woodworking but now and again I will need to drill steel. I no longer trust product reviews as folk get paid for creating them. thanks for your help
  17. The Sako one is quite good value but hard to find online just now. The Mrs bought me the Harkila rip stop one for my birthday, avoid this like the plague, it ripped the first time I used it and it turns out that the rip stop ? material is so thin you can almost see through it.
  18. I often pickle surplus eggs from the chickens. Just in plain malt vinegar for me. Up to day 4 they are still a bit rough then they start to mellow. Properly fresh eggs (almost never available from a shop) can be a pain to peel, sometimes I use the end of a teaspoon to get under the membrane and ease the shell off with plenty of dunks in water.
  19. Has common sense completely left us? My delivery from DPD, some plumbing bits I need, is sitting outside my front gate. Pleasant driver who tells me that his hand held computer will not allow him to deliver until 7.56. I just wonder which idiot created such an inflexible system? It is a very busy time for delivery drivers for goodness sake let them get on.
  20. I had a quick search of the highway code on the gov website. I found that the line is called an 'edge line' but could find no rules associated with. When I was learning over 40 years ago I seem to recall being told that you should not cross solid white lines on offside or nearside but that was a long time ago. If you are going to question this then if you also cannot find relevant rules in the highway code maybe this could be used as a defense of sorts.
  21. If mine is full, which is rare this year as I have been home except for 3 days in hospital, it will still play the recorded message and then state that a message cannot be left and hang up. It is a BT model, cannot remember which one but certainly not expensive, I think around 30 quid for 2 phones. I can bluetooth my contacts from mine and the mrs' phone and it matches the incoming number and displays who is calling. Amazing the low cost of some technology. I seem to get around 5 calls a day from unrecognised numbers which display i.e. not hidden, who hang up as soon as they, or the computer, realise it is an answerphone, ideal.
