amateur
Special constables were brought in during WW2 to back fill forthose who had gone to war. For some strange reason we still have them. Actually the office of special constable goes back many centuries and generally they provide useful assistance to the regulars. I believe that under certain circumstances a magistrate can require any citizen to be sworn in as a special constable upon penalty of imprisonment (but nowadays they are volunteers). My daughter and son-in-law are both regular police officers (one started as a PCSO, the other as a special) - and I wouldn't call either of them a waste of space
death from below
I reckon that lottery lout bloke should become a PCSO - now that he's blown his 9 million, he's gonna need some useful employment - he could then afford some more decent bling and wear it with his uniform - and when a Police supervisor pulled him about his inappropriate jewellry, he could go sick for months and claim unfair treatment and bullying at work - because that would never happen, would it? MPT1
Where I live we are glad to see anyone resembling a copper. Unfortunately these generally don't. They are as scruffy as the traffic wardens. My mate was given a ticket £80 worth for droping a butt. My advice to him was ask two questions, "can you arrest me?" and "can you restrain me?". If the answer is no tell them to **** ***. Special Constables are trained and have powers I believe.
kyska
People really really shouldn't be confusing community support officers with Special Constables, SC's are volunteers, unpaid but have full police powers in or out of uniform, exactly the same a regular police officers, carry the same kit, and often, depending on area do not show any signs that they are special constables, its highly likely that if you have dealt with a police officer it could well have been a special. PCSO, Community protection etc are civilians, and have 'any person' powers, along with a few more granted by the Chief constable at his or her descretion, IE parking offences. Flashman
Those I have seen are generally members of the commonwealth - normally a 5 feet tall Indian women weighting in at 20 stone - with beard. I presumed doing the job was to qualify for income benefits, but I may be wrong. We should also remember the female PCSO stabbed to death at her husband's behest: it turns out she used the uniform to threaten people who owed money to her husband's car hire brothel company. It all went wrong when husband decided he preferred the company of a younger, Easter European prozzie...
Aled
Got to say the ones i've dealt with have been excellent, however i do think i've been lucky, they have been , ex policemen who have retired and taken this job to keep an interest, ex military people hence good discipline, or people using it as a stepping stone to get into the police force, therfore all have been well motivated and have worked hard. Just my take. Tight Lines Aled

Correct! - though I believe that different forces equip their specials to different levels. In many of the debates that we have about the police on here we seem to forget that we don't have a national police force (thank god) and that there are differences between the police forces of different areas.
