Was just looking up how set out a decoy pattern on utube when I came across this guy. Never heard of him before and don't recall anyone mentioning him on here. Anyway, there's a few good videos on there for both novice & experienced shooters alike. This is the one I was looking at initially but his other videos are very informative too.

I have seen a few of his video's, obviously knows his stuff...I gather he was a bit of an icon, especially with the older air rifle boys. I guess a lot of the older 'uns on here will of heard of him for sure

He done a book called Air Rifle Hunting, i think he wrote for Airgun World or Airgunner, which i use to read when i was younger.

i think John Darling passed away a good few years ago unfortunately, a very knowledgeable man.

Yes, he was a good guy! Always wore Silver shadow trainers from the Army & Navy shop.

I met him once in the Golden Galleon pub, just outside of Seaford, real nice guy and he took the time to talk.

As a kid, I used to love reading his stories in Airgunner and and can still remember my excitement as a teen when I found his book in the library shelf. Sadly he did pass away from a brain tumour. A very good guy.

He was one of my heros, reading the comics, which seemed really good when I was twelve, he was leaps and bounds ahead in his writing skills, let alone his hunting skills.

 

I still have a pile of mags with his writing in, in the loft.

 

He died a long time ago, brain cancer I believe.

he used to use a rapid 7 when me and my mates dreamed of having a gun like that

Used to read his articles in Airgunner I think it was in the early 80s. I'm sure he used to use a bit of artistic license

as allready said john was a brill fella and hunter wrote for airgunner mags,used a hw 80 for years then went to rapid 7,was my hero as a kid.sadly past away few years back,killed some rabbits and pigeons with airguns he did fair play.

A well respected guy also published a work on Bass fishing which he also did very well, I think a whole joey Mackrel was his favourite.One of the farthers of modern air rifle hunting if not THE farther of it

He also had an AA-S410 in camoflauge flavour. Always wanted one since I read his article about it in Airgunner

Got to say that as a kid he was to my hero, used to love reading his articles in airgun world, because of him I got my first and still have it HW 80

i think he used to have a article in shooting times in the 80s if not mistaken.

A verey great man read many of his articles as a kid it's becouse of people like him were all pout there now doing are bit.

I used to read JD's articles over and over in the mags. He was a great airgun hunter and writer. I never did read his book, but it's something I'd definately buy if I spotted one at a game fair. RIP John, I'm sure we're all very grateful for what you taught us.

That's interesting. I know the Golden Galleon. Right next to the Cuckmere river in the valley of the same name, looking out over the Seven Sisters. Beautiful part of the country. I see you're now in Wales so assume you used to live down that way? And how come I've not heard of him before? I thought the vids on utube were great. Very humble guy and real gent in every respect by the sounds of things.
