olim
I know that this is a subject that has been covered before but recently insurance seems to have changed, anyway I am looking to buy my first car soon but dont want to buy a car to find out that i cant insure it. I would like a land rover 90, where is the best place to find insurance for one and what other cars are worth considering that would be insurable, does any one have any experience insuring their 4x4 at 17. what insurance companies should i look at, at the moment on go compare i am getting quotes of 4 grand plus. highseas
its the same with me mate its hopeless the cheapest way i found is to get includes on say your dads policy as multi car then include you as a driver
J@mes
A young driver on a 4x4 is probably going to be best looking at specialist insurers such as frank pickles, adrian flux, sureterm etc. As you have already found out, mainstream insurers do not want your business. Could you cope with a series rather than a 90? It might make it a bit cheaper
olim
I have done that and it is about the same, I think that i may start ringing up to see if i get a better qoute, i am hoping to get a car ready for when i get my license and would idealy like a defender. BerettaSV10
One thing to watch if you are added as a additional driver on a policy with your parents listed as the main drivers, and you are listed as a ocasional driver. if you are the main driver you may find your insurance will be void. Its no fun for yong people to try and find insurance, try searching on the internet for a specialist insurance company that deals with 4 X 4's or young drivers. You may find that the ones advertised are not the best for young drivers. What you might find is a insurance company has a target range of criteria so they can offer cheaper insurance, if you are outside this criteris the premiums start to increase. mick miller
A defender won't be cheap to insure, they're often nicked and have **** security. I'm not sure what to suggest but when I was much younger I used to have an old series IIa, I drove that for 12 years and that helped build some no claims up. MITCHF
Feel sorry for you, my lad passed last Sept. Cheapest qoute he has on a £600 1.2ltr old car was "£2300", it's mental. No wonder there are so many un insured youngster's on the road. As for a Defender, you should really forget that idea, they wanted £3800 for my lad on one. He's now on my wife's insurance as an occasional driver, and that's all he is. But he'll build up no claims. Godd luck
4eyes
Also, sorry to add to your woes, but if your 17 you can't pay for it monthly. You have to pay it all at once as you cannot have credit. Made my eyes water when I had to stump up for mine at 17.
Alex C
What about an older landy on a classic policy with limited mileage. May be an option?
Dave-G
Unfortunately the most feasible option is to save up some funds for when you get a bit older. It's amazing how people who have never had a car manage so well without one until they get one, then then can't manage without it: Much like mobile phones or even watches.
WGD
Consider the differences between Fully Comp, Third Party Fire & Theft (TPFT and covered if it gets nicked) and Third Party Only (TPO legally entitles you to be on the road but you're car is not insured against being stolen nor are any repairs insured if you have an accident). When I had bikes a few years ago now I always insured TPO and saved a fortune. It's a risk, but I was confident my bike was safe at night and at work and if I binned it I accepted that would be paying for a bike I couldn't ride. bruno22rf
Avoid Equity red star policies like the plague-some daft tart reversed into me after i stopped in a pub car park (in a parking bay) to answer my phone. They have treated me like a criminal because i used the words "mobile phone" even though i never even had time to get the thing out of my pocket. They demanded photocopies of every document i have and sent a guy down from London (55 miles) to check the mileage on my car.The woman who hit me has said that i entered the car park via the exit and despite my supplying photographic evidence that proves otherwise ERS say they are most likely going to settle knock for knock.Unbelievable. Insurance premiums have become silly money so as it stands you're better off treating driving almost as a privilege and not as a right, just because you're legally old enough to do it doesn't mean you'll be able to afford it. There's lot's of things I'm old enough to do and would love to be able to do but don't have to brass for them. You *can* manage without a car, it'll take you more planning ahead for lifts/buses/trains or more time for you to get your **** on your bike to get somewhere but you will manage. At your age with the number of essential journeys you're likely to make it'll be far cheaper in the long run just to get taxis for the odd essential trip rather than shelling out for the expense of running a car. When you hold a full license and are a few years older it'll be more affordable, it'll still be a black hole for money but you'll be able to afford it as and when you really *need* a car. Not much consolation at the minute I know but life isn't fair (or cheap). Ashley
libs
It was cheaper for me ona 2.4 petrol Ford Maverick than it is on my gay mobile now. But the Maverick was old and not very fast whereas my gay mobile is new and a little bit fast (sometimes). Shop around and don't be afraid to argue with them over the phone for a better deal! As a side note my father looked to insure me short term on his VW Toe-rag and becuase the short term companies won't touch under 25's a year as a named driver would have cost me the grand total of £14,700. al4x
the problem is the size of claims attributed to young drivers. All you can do is get as low an insurance group vehicle as possible and try not to have an accident for a year

All you can do is get as low an insurance group vehicle as possible and try not to have an accident for a year its down to people like me. I got a brand new corsa when i was 18 and smashed it the day i got it. a complete right off and i was on vauxhalls free insurance, 56 miles on the clock, i went up the **** of a :yp: L200 which needed a new rear tow bar mount only

Made my eyes water when I had to stump up for mine at 17. but you can get it paid from someone elses account who is over 18 i have never been able to stump up the full amount and have payed monthly 20 now and insurance is getting abit better (even though i havent got any no claims ) i did pass plus, saved me abit for the first year. i have my mum on MY policy, she is a 2nd driver and it brought my insurance down by £253.46 per year! (usefull too as she has borrowed the car a couple of times! putting my girlfriend on aswell also brought it down by £38 theres plenty of ways of saving but i wouldnt bother getting a landy just yet. get something in a lowinsurance group and build up atleast 1 years no claims before you take the lunge unless you have generous relatives or a well paid job!
