Frenchieboy
Here's an interesting question that should start quite an interesting topic and get some pretty mixed answers. If you could have just one gun to use as an "All Rounder" what would it be and why?
Devon Fox
For me it is my 243, allows me to shoot any of my main quarry. It's as simple as that really, I honest believe it's one of the most flexible calibers. It does all I want.
Dougy
If given the choice i would go for a .30, you can load .224 bullets with the use of a sabot, and from 100grn rite up to 220grn for anything you fancy in .30cal I dont think there is another cal you can do that with
Browning
6.5x55AI. Soft shooting, extremely accurate, easy to load for. Load up with 95gn VMax for vermin, 140gn SGK for Deer. 142gn SMK for 1000 yard gong bashing. A very capable caliber indeed.

Supremely accurate (even out to staggering distances... 1000yds!) abilitsy to use bullets weighing from <70gn to >160, very mild recoil and the ability to drop anything on these isles! If I had to keep just one calibre that would be it! If I could only keep 1 rifle however, that would probably be my TRG which is a .
SPEEDY
9.3X62, very mild recoiling and enough power to cleanly take any game animal that I'm likely to hunt. I have used it to take bunnies, hares, foxes, cats, goats, pigs and deer. It takes game cleanly with impressive penetration and knock down power without being excessive in meat destruction. With any luck I will have a buff on the deck with it by Christmas.
al4x
there isn't one as it entirely depends what you shoot. The question needs to be either deer related or small vermin etc. For me a .243 and an HMR covers all bases I need it to but neither would do on its own. pat g
For me i think it would have to be .308. It will cope with about anything that you are likely to hunt certainly in this country and any where else for that matter. To me its an "allround rifle" if there is such a thing. More suited to the job of effectively and humanely taking some of the bigger species you are likely to encounter such as Red Stags and Wild boar in particular. Interesting post as well by the way . bullet boy
For an allrounder the .243 would be my choice but I only do Fox Control and would say my 22-250 is my perfect calibre!
hoTshoT-16
.405 double express rifle, kill anything

henry d
.222, easy and cheap to reload and will drop all deer in the UK as well as fox and crows. Tin hat on and awaits battle :o :yp:

Tin hat on and awaits battle :o :yp: And I should think so too! So are you suggesting.... No, I'll not go there! :yp: My personal choice would be the 6.5x55. It does everything H's tripple will do but legally! Every day I wonder if selling mine was the right move? .243 is great and all that, but it's not a 6.5 and I can see it turning into a .260 in the not too distant future! Colster
I'd agree that .243 is a great all-rounder but for me if I could only keep one gun, it would be .22LR. I get way more opportunities to shoot rabbits than I do deer or fox currently and a .243 doesn't leave much rabbit behind.

It does everything that it says on the tin and then some :) (It's also legal for Roe deer up here :) )

Simon123
12 bore for me as i dont have anything else which takes my likings.  Might get a .17 HMR or a .22-250 in a year or two, then we'll see what my ideal calibre would be  Edited April 10, 2011 by Simon123
