Am I the only one who opts out of preference to always reverse? I drive a work van most of the time but thats not a reason why I want to scrape it dragging it along a hedge because some nasty little twerp has no spacial awareness in their nissan micra.

I find it farr quicker for me to back up than for some numpty to turn there head over their shoulder and start to try and back up with a full steering lock on going from side to side before either hitting the hedge and puling forward before trying again adnauseum then finally positioning themselves with 5' between them and the side of the passing place and a gap with inch clearance between mirrors.

I once met an old boy and reversed the best part of a mile back up the road (up hill), after he showed he was utterly incapable of going back 10' luckily I can use my mirrors so can back up at speed so the whole escapade only took 5 mins or so. On passing me the guy wound down his window and said nice driving..... I said, not really its called being able to actually drive!!!

Don't worry I live in the lakes and like to scare at least one tourist a day :good: a lot seem to come up in their audi's and beemers thinking they own the roads and then wonder why you won't budge on a narrow country lane when theres a perfectly good passing point 200 yards back :sly:

I've also taken to playing chicken, I've got a heavy duty towplate on the rear and soon theres going to be a 5mm re-inforced heavy duty steel bumper winch bumper on the rear too :) as you say a lot of the people I get tailgating me are women in fiestas or clios and well……………….1) I'll win the insurance claim and 2) a plastic clio hitting me in town if I do an emergency stop isn't going to damage my off road armour plating too much:P

I'm not the nicest driver to be around  and I've been told a few times I have serious road rage :o

You want to sort that out

Then work on your other issues you have and quite openly post about on hear

Dr evil stop talking absolute ****....I have to drive around the m25 and that's always full of traffic from people al

Over the country- as is London- you must be a big man forcing women and old people off the road in your big boys car,I've never heard such a load of ******** in my life typical lad giving it the biggun on the Internet but wouldn't say boo to a goose in real life! And it sounds to me like you are jealous of bmws,or Mercs or any Other car rather than a banged out old Landy!

been toying with the idea of my next motor choice seems between a disco TDV6 or a BM X5, think you have just persuaded me the X5 is the one to go for, it seems to have maximum aggravation factor built-in

KW

Drive them both first, X5 was an utter dog when I drove one a few years ago, I bought a Disco 2 TD5 ES, a far far better tool. The beamer was slow, noisy, wont pull the skin off a rice pudding and as for using it for lamping or hauling 4 guns and their dogs around on a shoot day perhaps with a trailer behind then forget it, it has a job to get itself off any grass in summer let alone a muddy bank in winter.

My wife and I own 2 4x4s, a Disco and a Defender, both TD5s, both good tools. My Disco will pull a twin axle trailer with a load of 2 tonnes on it reasonably comfortably, thats 2700kg all up, not a lot of 4x4s will do that. They only get rain washed and get used and abused every day off road, thats what they are designed for. As for not giving way etc then I try to be fair, usually !!. I have lost count of the times I have reversed my 5 foot x 10 foot box van trailer into a slot to make way for some **** who wont give way, I have a blind corner in my local village that hs cars parked on one side all the while, something like 15 cars in a row usually. So you go round the corner blind one way, never seen a car run up on the pavement to make enough room, yet I do if I can trailer and all.

I did hear that in fashionable parts of London some enterprising person has set up a service to get your Chelsea tractor a bit muddy !!.

By far the worst drivers have to be the school run parents, no matter what they are driving the cars will be parked all over the place at that time of the day. The road in the village here past the primary school is usually impassable with anything bigger than a pushbike between 8.30am and 9.15am and then again between 3pm and 3.45pm, its not a narrow road, its wide enough for 3 lanes but these brain dead idiots (not all of them fit this group I hasten to add) at those times of day are incapable of parking in such a way to allow that to happen. Before now, despite having an escort vehicle, I have had to reverse a long combination of tractor with 3.5m wide trailed potato harvester on the back and a haulm topper on the front a good distance up one of the local roads because Mummy was late with Pinky and Perky for school and didn't seem to have a reverse gear that functioned. I have also had to steer (the axle on the harvester steers due to the length of it) the harvester up into the hedge to get round a city-ite tourist in a gleaming Defender 110 station wagon when she stopped 2 ft away from the edge of the road on her side after going round my escort vehicle that had been stopping traffic 20m further up the road at the access to the farm yard only to have obscenities mouthed at me by her and the usual hand signals.......I think she lip read my response to her by the look on her face :yp:

I don't mind reversing up with farm vehicles but that depends on what is on the back of them and the view I have behind, its sometimes quicker to do that than wait for the car driver to find reverse......I'm sure that when I learnt to drive it was stated that you should ideally give way to vehicles larger than you as their visibility may not be so good.....People seem to think that because we have big vehicles we can throw them in hedges out of their way but that isn't the case, break a wing mirror on my tractor in doing so and thats £200 down the drain. I have been known to pull the flask trick in the past in my old job when driving the combine on roads if cars wouldn't move, they soon got the message!

I have never once seen road signs with tourist route on it and others that say no tourist route.

I spend a lot of my spare time and money in the lakes every year hill walking in some remote and awkward to get spots and find the locals some of the most friendly helpfully people you could meet.

Dr Evil you sound and act more like some irrate tourist than a local who should know better, a lot of roads start off ok and get steadily worse to people's horror but what would you have them do back up miles and stick to a roads that are no better than country lanes that they wouldn't know any better. We all have rat runs that we use to beat traffic but they are not exclusive to locals.

I hope you meet some other local that thinks just like you and you can both sit blocking the road looking hard at eachother with the doors locked.

You must have some commute to work to go five miles out of your way each time just to beat a bit of traffic.

If you've done much advanced driving why not show them your evasive j turn manoeuvre to the next passing place.

I have noticed that drivers of 4 x 4 are the most reluctant to pull into the verge when you meet them with your humble hatch back on a country road.

Blackpowder

I have noticed this when meeting a 4x4 on a small road they will stay on the tarmac shrugging shoulders as if what do you want me to do go on the grass?

So my 2wd has to go in the ditch while we pass

You've threatened to sell your gun about a dozen times to pay for its repair

That was when I thought I'd blown the injector pump……turned out to be glow plugs which are only £16 each rather than £1000 +

Underestimated the landrovers injector pump strength

Ever heard of IAM and pass plus ?

As to blocking the country lane…..a 7ft lane is fairly easily blocked by a standard discovery

If mr beemer wants to have a go at me then he can feel free to do so whilst I lock my doors and call the police :)

A 7ft lane is just as easily blocked by a Cleo being driven by a 20 stone gorilla with his big brother sat along side him - What then?

As for "If mr beemer wants to have a go at me then he can feel free to do so whilst I lock my doors and call the police" - Well that says it all doesn't it, and what are you going to tell the police "I'm blocking a public road which I think I own and because someone wants me to move over and I've got some funny smells coming from my trousers because I can talk the talk but I can't walk the walk, what should I do"?
