Catweazle
I thought I was quite a handy sort of bloke until I read this thread. Gobsmacked and astonished by this work. I am a buffoon in comparison ( a handsome buffoon though ). Same here, except the "handsome" bit.
Wildfowler
I thought I was quite a handy sort of bloke until I read this thread. Gobsmacked and astonished by this work. I am a buffoon in comparison ( a handsome buffoon though ). Merry Xmas Wildfowler All the best Same here, except the "handsome" bit. Thanks! My parents always told me, and I always tell my boys, 'if you put your mind to it, you can do anything!' And I do truly believe that, it might take time, and a lot of effort, but it wouldn't be fulfilling if it didn't!
Wildfowler
I spent a bit of time this weekend putting some more fittings onto the punt and gun making the front gun rest Here it is with the gun mounted. The rest needs painting but i needed to check the height of it
Wildfowler
(before anyone says anything, the fence in the background got totaled by the tree that fell down and i'm trying to buy the land the other side so no point replacing it! )
Wildfowler
I drilled and tapped a hole in the underside of the gun to accept an eye. This will be where the failsafe rope attaches in case the breaching rope fails, it also has a length of rope and bouy clipped to it in case the worst happens and lastly, it has a rope run through it to stop it springing forward after a shot In this pic you can also see the fail safe attaching point... Wildfowler
This shows where the rope now attaches to the punt to stop the spring back

Catweazle
Do punts have names, like other boats ?
Wildfowler
Do punts have names, like other boats ? They are normally named after their maker but i'm certainly not into that! I do intend to name it and paint it onto the inside of the wash boards but couldn't decide on a name... there were some good suggestions on here a while back! vmaxphil
on another note how big is your gun cabinet seriously how are you going to secure the gun, I know its not going to be nicked to be made into a sawn off but what has the feo said about security ? Catweazle
They are normally named after their maker but i'm certainly not into that! Imagine how proud your lad would be to point it out to his own kids in years to come.
Wildfowler
on another note how big is your gun cabinet seriously how are you going to secure the gun, I know its not going to be nicked to be made into a sawn off but what has the feo said about security ? The amount of security on that thing, it'd be easier to steal a gun from a cabinet! And to make doubly sure, the breach plug, firing pin, etc are all locked in my gun cabinet so its completely worthless and unusable without them! FEO was fine with how it is being secured and didn't ask for any extra measures... He took a pragmatic approach too, i.e its hardly a bank robbers gun! you cant get anywhere quickly with it! TIGHTCHOKE
I think your lovely boat and its artillery piece would put the Royal Navy to shame as they are at the moment!

Old farrier
After such a remarkable quality build one has to ask "Whatevernext"? Would use it be a good reply? Well done on build its just so good all the way through
Wildfowler
Thanks for the comments again chaps... I spent some time this week finishing off the gun rest and matting the gun These pics hopefully show the difference
Wildfowler
I also spent some time making some new shot cups, this time out of plastic from a milk bottle... the black ring is where I heated it up and smoothed out a ridge. Big Mat
What loads are you using Wildfowler? I presume you are loading ITM/ITX?
Wildfowler
Would use it be a good reply? Well, I decided Old farriers suggestion was a pretty good one! Today was the day to put it in the water! After such awful weather, today was the first opportunity to get out and the last day for a fortnight that I could get out and back on the tide. As ever, my good sport of a mrs was a massive help!!! We started loading up at about 8:00 this morning
TIGHTCHOKE
I've been waiting for this part. More great work W.F. Bravo!!
Wildfowler
By the time it was loaded and we had got down to the launching spot it was 9:15ish and the tide was ebbing fast so we unloaded it and got the gun mounted
Wildfowler
By the time we had messed about with cars and kids, there was only 8 inches of water covering the mud pan so I walked the punt out to avoid damaging the bottom
Wildfowler
Having pushed it over the mud i scrubbed my boots off prior to getting fully in. Keeping the punt clean is essential for both practicality and safety Then i set off out to sea
Wildfowler
I floated out on the tide for an hour and a half or so and sat off a point about 2 miles from where I set off. I sat out there and watched a few nice mixed packs of widgeon and teal settle down onto an exposed mud bank
