I accept that from time to time we at BASC, and indeed other orgs are moaned at for always 'preaching to the converted' well maybe so, but it’s important for 'the converted' to know what we are doing on their behalf.

But today BASC has sent a letter to all local newspapers in the UK highlighting the benefits of game shooting and game meat.

The letter informs readers that the pheasant shooting season is about to start and lists some of the advantages of game meat. It makes reference to the increase in the popularity of game and to some of the conservation benefits associated with shooting. It also promotes BASC’s Taste of Game campaign.

The letter is intended to make the argument that shooting is good for the economy, good for the environment and that game meat is good to eat. The local press has an important and very substantial readership and by printing BASC's letter about the benefits of game shooting and game meat, they can encourage even more people to try a taste of game.

Regards to all

Now you're talking, well done BASC!

'twill be interesting down here as I was not too impressed with our local rag being somewhat anti in outlook which I believe turned out to be just the editor and she has now departed. So, we'll see. The surprising thing was I also believe it turned out that the group to which the paper belonged had the contract to print the Sporting Gun.

All local papers? I'll keep an eye out in the Yorkshire post to see if anything is printed.

If anything is printed, I will send in a letter about a local shoot which has had good success with conservation. There's grouse moor and a woodland valley, all teeming with birdlife. I will also keep an eye out for any uneucated anti comments.

How long do you think it would take for anything to be printed in the local papers?

Thanks, yes please keep an eye out!

As to when they are likely to print, I would suggest any time over the next 10 days is most likely.

Any good news story about shooting and conservation on a local or regional or national level is always worth letting the local papers know about

We almost need a body that deals with possitive promotion of the sport to the general public, we can longer think that we can just keep under the radar and hope no one notices, as a sport we have to give possitive spin to a great pastime......Well done David lets hope this inichitive is the first of many, you can always call on me for any inspirational direction.

Purely out of interest, was it a letter or a press release in the form of a filler article that needs no rewriting?

It's a while back, but I've worked as a regional newspaper editor, and as a press officer, and organisation letters were always at the bottom of the pile for publication as you get so many more letters from readers and are always strapped for space. These days, it seems local newspapers print fewer letters than they formerly did. It would appear the tailored article with illustration stands a better chance of pubication. Of course, I realise the cost implications.

Nevertheless, well done. When a free range chicken can cost a tenner a brace of pheasants is as good if not better.

Perhaps BASC should approach Brian May to help publicise Game to Eat! He loves publicity, he loves animals and I assume he eats?

Or maybe we could get Eric Clapton, Ian Botham, Stevie Winwood, Jack Charlton all to have a meal prepared by Clarissa Dixon Wright???

ive spent some time researching and it turns out brian may is actually a badger.

Good idea but doubt there's a snowballs chance in hell of it getting published in any of the local rags round here. They seem to have a policy of refusing to print anything connected with shooting apart from occasional articles about Ian Coley's place (always welcome but limited!). They even decline to answer letters asking what their policy is.

It is difficult to know how you can get past the prejudice of local paper editors, if they decide pretty much nothing about shooting that might be construed as positive will be printed then it won't get printed!
