lee-kinsman
Working dogs. This might well bring criticism but I'm not bothered, but if they were useless and couldn't shape up to being excellent gundogs then I wouldn't keep them. Actionpigeons
First and foremost all my dogs are working dogs and all live outside, but I class them as shooting/beating companions

cocker boy
Mine are working dogs during the season and dogs the rest of the year. They never come in the house and are solely kennel dogs
ollie
My dogs were acquired to be hunting dogs, therefore, I would consider them working dogs first and foremost. However, although they live outside, they are still part of the family and our y companions.
kent
I wouldn't keep a pet dog as a dog needs a purpose in life. That said the ideal is a bit of both, if you talk to your dog other than to give it commands its a pet also, I suppose the real defining line is do they ever come inside and do they ever play with the kids etc.
WGD
Working dogs, if I didn't use them for shooting I wouldn't have them therefore they are not pets. Not saying I wouldn't have a pet dog, we have had a few, but it wouldn't be a dog bred to work like the ones in my kennel.
vulpicide
All my dogs have been workers but they are also pets and guard dogs the current two are Meg 13 1/2 and her son Miko 7 1/2 (my avatar) russells both of them we have been using the same lines for the last 40 years working fox above and below ground. Meg is a superb worker and a tremendous pet born in my daughters bed where she still sleeps, Miko has taken my place in my wifes affection so I appear to have dropped down the pecking order in my house. Ho Hum merry Christmas to all
al4x
mine is a bit of both as well, she is happiest when working but otherwise just wants to be in the truck or asleep. Sleeps inside so is part of the family
ziplex
3 Springers and a GSP here, all pets and two of them work occasionally, mainly wildfowling and pigeon. For me, if you kennel or use a dog as a tool you are missing out on a huge ammount a dog has to offer......we find them involving, comical, playful, endearing, etc and so on. Never tire of having the Pointer draped over my lap, or watch her and the young springer romp around or lay in front of the stove together...we class them as important members of the family who give back hours of pleasure (and entertainment) and who ask for little in return. scutt
working dogs kept outside have the run of the garden when the grand kids are over .As I spend more time with the dogs than the family they must be classed as companions but not pets
P~MX
whenever I get or have to get a new dog for myself it's got as a dog to hunt but in sayin that my main dog is my best companion who goes everywhere I can possibly take him, I take him to fish with me every day I go, I'd take him just for a walk down the river, to the beach, even to a clay shoot some times, he's not really a pet more a good friend
