good alround cartridge?

Recommended Posts

Does weight make a difference,28g ,36g etc

I think the more

Weight of shot you have the better the pattern will be at further distances I.e. It holds it's pattern for longer therefore longer range birds should in theory have more pellets striking it.

Someone

Correct me if I'm wrong, but

That is what I always thought the Extra weight was for.

Dave.

Oh and gamebore clear pigeon 30-32grams 6 is a good'n.

If youve got a friendly gunshop nearby get the gun from him and ask him if you can have a slab of assorted cartridges (paid for obviously) but he might do you a deal if they have a gun that fits and do a deal to get the carts cheaper.

I did this when i got my twenty bore.

Also clear pigeon by gamebore are growing ever more popular.

gamebore clear pigeon 32g 6s in fibre.

imo a brilliant cartridge, tried loads of others but keep going back to them.

will kill anything youre likely to shoot at, pigeon, crow, rook, magpie, rabbit, squirrel, pheasant and partridge ive shot them all with this cart, hard hitting and well priced.

As Im awaiting my sgc it got me thinking over what cartridges i should try.

pigeons, magpies, rabbits.

i have shot before but never bought my own cartridges .

i will be buying them in boxs of 25 or 50 at a time, so i can try several that folks recomend

thanks in advance

I would get the cheapest i could find, if i were you. Any 28-32gm, 7 1/2 - 5 shot will do nicely for what you want.

For vermin stick to 6's for feather and 5's for fur, when i say fur i dont mean foxes :eh:

good advice there Tod. if the op can judge his ranges ok, he won't go far wrong with them sorts of loads. i've always found gamebore and fiochi produce good consistant shells ;)

For the quarry you list just go for a couple of boxes of no 6 shot to start with.

28-32g are fine. Generally the heavier the load the more they'll kick in the shoulder.

We all have our favourites and this can be based on all sorts of complications. Of the "pigeon" loads Eley HB 6.5g 32g is by far the best.....IMHO :good:

Also bear in mind , it could depend on what gun you get, if its a lightweight o/u game gun or side by side then it will be uncomfortable shooting 30/32 gram cartridges in any large amount so what you think are ok when shooting a box or so can become a painful experience if shooting 300 or more in a day at pigeon .

If you gun is going to be light stick to 28gram loads

Like motty I have always found the cheapest were the best.

Listen to his advise and please please don't get to involved with all the "this one is better than that one.

Try and buy thousands of cheap shells and just shoot them. The more you shoot the better you get.

Learn, where the shot is going to go when you pull the trigger, not what size shot it is.

99.9999% of shooters will never get to world class standard because we never shoot enough.

That lad who won gold will fire more in a day than I have fired in my life, but there I've only been shooting for 50 years.

Totally agree here, the only cartridge I use when not on the clays unless using the 20g or the shop is out !

For pigeons and game shooting I like Clear pigeon 30g 6 fibre wad, really good cartridge. You should be able to buy them for around £200/1000, good value as they are every bit as good as some of the more expensive game carts. For clays I buy the cheapest from Fiocci, LyalVale, Eley first, eley olympic, no real preference. Where the ground insisits on felt wad i like Eley First 7.5 28g.

Having said all that there is no substitute for geting lots of practice, as aoops missed again says buy thousands and just shoot them! :)

Everybody has their own favourites as you have seen.

If your gun is a SBS then use 28gr loads, if a lightweight O/U then 30gr, a heavier o/u then 32gr and a semi 32gr,

As to makes anything from Gamebore, Eley, Hull Cartridge, Sipe, Express will be fine. But whatever you buy STICK TO IT, you will have good days and bad days with it but when you have a bad day you will remember a good day so have confidence in your cartridge and confidence is the key.

I have used all the above over the years to a greater or lesser degree, I usually buy 5 years worth at a time. Currently I am with Eley, before that Hull, changed for cost reasons only. Shot a few Express Black Diamond supreme game last week, nice sweet cartridge.
