washerboy
Does Anyone carry a larger sized cartridge "just in case" a fox gets up, or do they only load bigger stuff if they are going on a fox drive. was wondering what size is adiquate, i will only buy one box so price isnt an issue. It will be put through a 70mm chambered sxs if that makes a difference
motty
I have only ever shot one fox with a shotgun, and i killed it with 30gm no.6. It was being chased down by me on the back of a quad and i couldn't put the 42gm 3's in that i have brought with me for mr fox. Any decent cartridge will kill a fox, but at any range you may not want to go lower than a 3. I probably wouldn't go any bigger than BB, because then your pattern really starts to get compromised. Vince Green
Don't buy a whole box specially, get something like 4s that you can use for squirrel drays or even pigeons at a pinch.
fenboy
I carry , a half dozen size 0 mini magnums in my bag just in case , not had a fox with them yet , but decided to use a couple on crows that thought they were too clever to come in range last week , rather effective they were
Underdog
5s, 4s n' 3s plenty. Keep a good pattern to ensure vitals being struck. When it goes down shoot it again and reload. Be ready to shoot again! U.
njc110381
I used to use 42g #1. They hit very hard - will kick a bit in that sort of gun but will certainly do the job. It depends on the range - the bigger the better but I've had a fox over with a .410 loaded with #6 before and it didn't take a step before dropping. Now I carry my combi gun they either get 30g #6 if they're close or the 7x57 if they're not. That sorts them!
Redgum
I used to keep a couple of BB's in my cartridge belt, never shot a fox but would often grab one by mistake and mash a 30yd incoming pigeon.

walshie
Always take some 42g 1's "in case"
al4x
Just in case never happens, if you are on a fox drive then fine but otherwise they never give you chance to switch. I've shot a fair number with game loads and the trick is be the one that stands absolutely still and let them come to you. 30 yards and under they really don't know the difference in load
Lord Geordie
I used to have a load of alphamax #3 but used the last up on a game drive. I now have a box of BB magnums but prefered the #3's

Guest cookoff013
42g BB, or if you want to lighten up 36g of #1. but i`d go for the 42g load without compromise.
the hide shooter
i always carry a couple of winchester double magnums in 3" 54g of shot size 3! they stop charlie like a brick through a plate glass window!
stu nesling
dont go above bb as pattern fails,36g 3's is my choice in 70mm. kicks a bit, but useful for hare too.
palo
I always carry a few big shells Alphamax in AAA36g, Again alphamax in BB36g and I find No3 in fiocchi is good in my side by side I have patterned a lot and these are what works for me the AAA only pattern well in my left barrell half choke. When we are on our shoot at the farm we would have a fox or two that would break cover from the same spot always on different beats and at this stage there is real cometition to see who draws them pegs and that is where the double trigger comes in real handy bird shot in the right barrell and a Strong cartridge in the left. Alycidon
I have carried 1 36gr cartridge for 4 years and not used it. Shot size has worn off but its either 4 or BB. Usually there is not time to load it not that I have shot or shot at a fox on a driven day for probably 10 years. Last time I did I had 2 on the same day as a guest, sub 20 yards with 5s. kent
Yes often if I am carrying a break action. That said I have belted all sorts of game and vermin with a heavy load of no.1 when foxing - it don't make as much mess as you might imagine, many a teal or widgeon has been dropped by a wildfowler after goose with BB or no,1 over the last 100yrs punt gunners didn't tend to load with no6 either. Small shot is not great on fox unless your a competent shot with a good angle on the quarry and the range is well inside 30yds
Gregthegreat
I always carry three AAA's in the left side if my cartridge belt for that very reason. Used one or two on the odd occasion, normally when walking back to the car.
karpman
Shot plenty with shotgun always use 42grm 1s tried bb's etc. Found no better cartridge for the job than 42 1s in all honesty. Karpman
