Longchalk
I need to get one chimney swept in an old Georgian cottage. Hardly the job of the century.... Will I need a second mortgage?... Anyone got any idea what sort of price would be reasonable?
pegasus bridge
It's easy enough to do yourself if you buy the brushes, although it's a filthy job! Edited November 26, 2013 by pegasus bridge
The Croc
Should be in the approx region of £30 +/-, cost me 35, (part time fireman) the sweep should also check your chimney (camera) to make sure it's safe Edited November 26, 2013 by The Croc
Longchalk
Thanks Pegasus, but the Landlord wants to see a receipt from a proper sweep, once a year under the terms of my lease..... I don't actually have the first mortgage yet y'see!
-Mongrel-
They are advertising locally to me as sweeping done FROM £40.00.
Fisherman Mike
Thanks Pegasus, but the Landlord wants to see a receipt from a proper sweep, once a year under the terms of my lease..... I don't actually have the first mortgage yet y'see! That's probably a condition of the Property insurance. Most Home insurance companies now stipulate that open fire or wood burner chimneys are swept annually by registered sweeps and that a certificate of compliance or receipt is given. You can sweep your own chimney but don't expect your insurance company to pay out for damage caused by a chimney fire if you do......because they wont ! I would advise anyone with an open fire or woodburner to read the small print on their policy conditions and don't get caught out as my brother recently did. £4,750 unrecoverable damage after a recent chimney fire. ! Ouch !
pegasus bridge
I didn't realise that! I also didn't realise I needed to cover the room off the first time I did it - ended up with a room full of spot .
Dougy
I didn't realise that! I also didn't realise I needed to cover the room off the first time I did it - ended up with a room full of spot . Lol. My mate did his years ago, dislodged a brick that fell down of course together with s dustbin full of soot. All the rooms down stairs were black. For £40.00 you might as well pay a professional. HDAV
£40 seems cheap enough but would expect landlord to foot the bill!!!! Tenants don't have to pay for gas safe checks!!!!

The Mighty Prawn
Mine was £50 recently, thats the standard price round by me now they have to be registered to give you a certificate. Funny part is his header notes he is a member of the worshipful guild of master chimney sweeps - worshipful? they clean your chimney it's not exactly water to wine! secretagentmole
Seeping a chimney is not too bad, just make sue you have the appropriate diameter brush for the flu! Also a damp sheet over the mantlepiece, draped in front of the fireplace, held in place with a few bricks stops clouds of soot escaping all over the room!
