pigeon controller
DB gave me a call last night as he had been to the sales and on the way back home had past a field with a good number of birds on it . He had seen the farmer and had the OK to shoot today. The weather forcast was for heavy rain and gale force winds so we had a plan. I picked up DB at 08.00 and we drove out to the field. The plan was to drive the field to a oak tree in the middle , attach a brolly to the tree and build a hide round that, which we did and it kept us dry all morning. The magnet was being blown all over the place but it had the desired effect and brought birds to us even it the rain. The birds were very testing in the gale force wind and it was difficult to get the second shot off as they were away with the wind but we soon got into it and had some memorable shots. When the rain stopped the wind changed direction which made the birds present themselves a little easier. We finished at 15.00 and picked up one hundred and fifteen pigeon and one crow so it was worth getting wet for.

JDog
Maize stubble seems to be providing good sport all over the place at the moment. I suppose it makes a pleasant change from acorns and beech mast. A good observation by DB and an excellent day for both of you and an excellent way to end the year. No doubt you will be rooting for a close season for pigeons as per one of the more prominent threads of late? Your close season will run from the time you set off on your annual pilgrimage to Greece to get an all-over sun tan until the time you return to recommence your activities in the field. How do you know I have an all over tan? Have you fitted CCTV to my House. Regards the close season I spent twelve weeks in Greece this year but had lots of calls from farmers while I was away so next years holiday will be shorter so I can be on call. So my close season will be approx eight weeks. Edited December 30, 2013 by pigeon controller

The one thing I will say is once you have permission if they phone you , make every effort to turn out it pays dividends in the long term. Cosd
Great bag for this time of year! We've hardly seen a bird since harvest over our permissions. Before that we had a great year, lets hope it picks up soon, I've even contemplated going on the clays!!

Dr D
super bag PC. I'm twiddling my thumbs at the minute out of the country. But hope to get back at them saturday week. keep up the good work. here's to a productive 2014
motty
Top bag, PC. You did well to shoot a bag like that in strong winds. I must admit i'm not a big fan of shooting in wind like that. As you said, it makes getting a second (or third) shot off really difficult. I have seen at least 3 fields of maize in the Kings Lynn area that are attracting thousands of pigeons at the moment. Shame I don't have permission to shoot on any of them....yet.
