Family holiday in Devon or Cornwall

I'm thinking of taking the family (1 wife, 2 teenagers and an 8 year old) on holiday to Devon or Cornwall this July. I have never been and was wondering if any PW members can give me advice on where to stay. Information on the location and individual property would be appreciated - I'm really looking for a mid price self catering option.

Thanks in advance.

Alan

I read a similar post last year concerning where to go in the uk for your family hols-general advice seemed to be Pembrokeshire so I took the advice and we trundled of to Tenby-best holiday by far for years-we were amazed at how few people were on the beach each day, it also seems to have its own mini climate which was warm/hot compared to areas as little as 50 miles away-I would strongly suggest you consider this area-I used to go Cornwall/Devon most years but the overcrowding and rip off prices get on your tuts after a while.

Top advice. It alot closer to the Fishguard ferry too. I'll broaden my search.

Try Pembrokeshire. Exactly the same landscape as Cornwall but not as commercialised. By st David's there is 2 international surf beaches. Beautiful scenery and walks. Look at coastalcottages.co.uk

I have to agree, but I am a little biased.

I'm camping down there again this year with the Mrs and our 2 young daughters.

We are staying at tollgate farm campsite, close to a nice quite beech.

For some thing to do, go to the Eden project. Well worth a look at what can be done with a big hole in the ground.

+1 and Saundersfoot too, great beach...I do love St Ives, Cornwall though and have a holiday there every second year...wonderful place.

We used to go to Cornwall (in particular Newquay or St Ives) every year. We absolutely loved it, never failed to have a brilliant time. The last time we went was in the late 90's and in the same year we also went to Greece, but the St Ives holiday was much better.

Then we moved abroad.

In 2010 my wife wanted to come back to the UK and go for a traditional family holiday like we used to.

So we booked a caravan in St Ives, it certainly wasn't cheap when we considered the whole cost but we had very fond memories of the place, so paid up.

I wish we hadn't, it tarnished those happy memories.

The weather wasn't great, the place was run-down, the shops all seemed to sell expensive tat and rubbish. We had a trip over to Newquay and it was like a poor mans version of Blackpool, filthy and full of drunken idiots fighting in the streets at night. Penzance looked to all intents and purposes like it had closed up, there were only pound shops and cafes selling fried rubbish.

Lands End had been blocked off and you had to pay just to walk around.

Flambards, Poldark Mines and the Seal Sanctury had about a dozen tourists in total, wandering round looking miserable and everything was just a rip-off.

All in all we were throughly fed up and came home two days early.

If you enjoyed your holidays there some 20yrs ago then you'll be bitterly disappointed nowadays.

Even the clotted cream that we used to enjoy has been taken over commercially and everyone sells pots of sludge that doesn't taste the same.

Years ago we used to stay on a farm, we drank milk fresh from the cows, cream made on the farm, veg grown there and days out were on the beach or at the river catching crayfish. Now its 'kiss me quick' hats in Newquay, cheap tat in St Ives, pound shops in Penzance and the attractions are deserted and complete rip offs.

I'm gutted to say it but the place really has gone to the dogs.

The only saving grace about the whole holiday was fishing at Mullion, we only caught a couple but it was lovely just to sit there with my lad and not have to listen to drunken idiots or crowds of chavs.

(although to be fair Falmouth wasn't bad, that side of Cornwall seems to have been touched less by the chavs and rip-off merchants)

That's not really a glowing recommendation then? I have never been before but it sounds like I'm 20 years too late. Sorry to hear your memories have been spoiled.

We usually alternate between a year abroad and then a year on the west coast (of Ireland) but fancied a change for this year's "home" summer.

Thanks to all for the replies. As a result we are going to Pembrokeshire, and have made a provisional booking on a cottage near St. Brides. Pigeon Watch has just provided me with a holiday destination!

Cheers guys.

Wow, quite a broad statement. You might find that Cornwall has some fantastic places that you may of missed. Even Newquay has some nice bits, the old harbour is very beautiful as are the beaches.

Yep, it does still have some nice bits, like I said Mullion is still nice and Falmouth still retained some charm.

I was talking specifically about the places we used to go to, like Newquay and St Ives.

I remember days on the harbour beach or Fistral beach, then a lunch at a lovely little cafe in Newquay centre and a wander round the shops selling quaint souvenirs or cool surf stuff that didn't break the bank.

As kids we'd go off diving or jumping off the harbour walls, and wandering around the cliff paths.

I took my wife there on our first ever holiday together before we were married.

It was a fantastic place.

But as I said we wandered around Newquay wide eyed at all the amusement arcades, cheap rubbish shops and drunken louts and were really disappointed to find out it had turned into Blackpool.

Cornwall also won in 2013 best UK holiday region, 5th consecutive year. We must be doing something right.

Each to there own.

About 75% of our guests are returning customers some have been coming years, these are people that love Cornwall for the beaches, harbours, views and so much more including the laid back way of life. Some people get it and love it some never get it.

We visit St Ives in Cornwall almost every single year. Love the place and rarely have anything but sunshine.

Saundersfoot and Tenby, South Wales - similar but not quite in the same league - in my book. Very few other nearby places to visit, whereas Cornwall has Portleven, Portreath, St Mawes, Marazion, Padstow, Bude, Mousehole, Perranporth, Looe, Polperro, Fowey and Mevagissey to name but a few.

North Devon - Woolacoombe.
