Dangerous Dogs

Yet another youngster mauled terribly by three untethered Rotts.

Isnt it about time legislation was brought in to control the ownership of these dogs along with other similar breeds. ( we all know which they are )

How many more serious injuries or deaths have there to be before something is done.

How these dogs can be categorised by their owners as family pets is beyond me.

I saw a young mother the other day with two kids in a buggy and the biggest Bitch Rott ive ever seen in tow.

If that dog had decided it wanted to take a chunk out of anyone, there is nothing I or particularly the owner could have done about it. She couldnt even stop it from pulling her along. Its just down right stupidity keeping these types of dogs as house pets and certainly not fair on the dog.

In my opinion these dog breeds should be licenced, and kept muzzled at all times when not penned, or better still not kept at all in domestic situations. Its just bloody ridiculous having a dog as a macho fashion statement.

What do you all think. ?

I have got to say that i agree wit you Mike. I'm not saying i dislike dogs atall but there are alot of people getting these rotts and other breeds that are a danger to both children and other dogs. Like you have already mentioned, what is going to take for the dogs to be licenced or banned altogether in this country??

Indeed, this has been done.

To summarise the last debate, "banning" anything with legislation is ineffective (dangerous dogs act and hand guns etc).

What we need is a step back to old age values of:

1. taking personal responsibility for all of your own actions without seeking to appoint blame to a 3rd party or introduce excuse. Aggressively bread dogs "bite", that is not the dog's fault - the fault it bit someone / something is the sole responsibility of the owner (see 2 below).

2. applying common sense (in conjunction with taking responsibility) - aggressively bread dogs bite, therefore leaving them in a house with minors is irresponsible (see 1 above).

Here endeth the lesson.

Yes, this subject did get a long airing on the "Pit Bull" thread.

Perhaps a compromise is, that all dog owners should be obliged to pass a test, which would include an assessment of their personal circumstances.

They would then be granted a licence to own a category of dog.

A "need" to own certain types of "attack" dogs would have to be justified.

I still subscribe to the theory that, there are no bad dogs, just bad owners.

Mike,

As I made my opinions quite clear when replying to Baldrick in the recent dangerous dogs thread, I clicked on this one with the intention of sitting it out.

Unfortunately, your last sentence changed my mind.

My dog (an English Bull Terrier) gets put in the same category as Pit Bulls, Rottweilers etc.

I can assure you that when I purchased my first one almost a quarter of a century ago, fashion statement was not on the list of reasons for buying one.

I am also fairly certain that when the English Bull Terrier was developed by Mr Hinks (by profession a dog catcher) of Birmingham in the early 1800s, he wasn't breeding them for models to drag up and down a catwalk.

Incidentally, EBT's are derived from the now extinct English White Terrier and Dalmations, so should we ban poor old spotty dog too?

I do not drive a Vauxhall Corsa with an Airbus wing glued to the tailgate

I don't have a sound system in my Land-Rover that is capable of making my ears bleed.

I don't purchase my clothing from Matalan or JJB Sports.

I don't buy my jewellery from Elizabeth Duke at Argos either.

Not everyone who owns a dog which some people (normally incorrectly) class as dangerous is a Cretinous Chav.

Generalising by saying that all these dogs are only kept as fashion statements is talking out of your ****. :good:

Mike - "Isnt it about time legislation was brought in to control the ownership of these dogs along with other similar breeds. ( we all know which they are )".

You have the advantage over me here. I don't know which are dangerous. If memory serves, the woman who had the world's first face transplant was attacked by a Labrador. My dogs are Akitas, but one was attacked by a Labrador. Were Labradors the dogs you had in mind?

As I recall, she tried to kill herself with a pill overdose and (there are two schools of thought on this) as time passed the dog either tried to clumbsily revive her or just got peckish and tucked in when it was dinner time and no doggie dins arrived in the bowl. I am amazed that so much money has been spent putting her face back together - at least Steve Austin was an astronaut and wanted to live.

I digress....

I have been bitten by NUMEROUS dogs in my lifetime and the most recent was a Bull Mastif Quite a big thing and even after biting me i didn't want it destroyed and i still like the dog in question but it still don't like me :good: It was my own fault anyway.

I have been bitten by Jack russels - yorkshire terriers - An alsation a Labrador hell i was even bitten by MY dog a Portuguese podengo but he was a lovely little thing.

I think it's more how the dog is treat and what it's upbringing is like (cruelty etc).

My Brother currently has a Rotty Bitch and you couldn't meet a more soft dog. She sits for hours playing fetch and when you sit on the sofa she jumps up nuzzles in to you and goes to sleep on your lap just about.

As i say i think it's up bringing and the interaction with kids etc perhaps the kids tease the dogs and eventually the dog gets snappy as would a Mother narked for hours by her kids (mummy i want this)

Of course when Kids step out of line it's time for a Smack from their parents but what option does a dog have to say enough is enough?

Constant supervision by Parents and the dogs owners are needed.

While the little Girl "ellie i beleive" was mauled by a family dog with a HISTORY of biting in these circumstances if the dog has already been in trouble for attacking then the OWNER should have had the dog destroyed for safety reasons.

But what annoyys me more than anything are the countless parents who leave their kids to roam the streets without supervision. It's no wonder some kids end up bitten as they know no better. They jusat walk up to the dog totally unsuspecting and go to pat it and the dog bites

"Officer my 4 year old lad went to the shop 3 miles away to get me a pack of fags and was mauled by a dog on the way home"

One. The dog should NEVER be let out alone (reguardless of breed) unless off the leash with the owner present and well trained to return etc when called. As stated above if it's temprement is in question then it should also be muzzled.

Two. Kids should not be left alone and unsupervised while with dogs like that either.

It's high time if anything happens to kids without supervision of ages below 8 due to parental neglect then the PARENT should also get a kicking.

That is in poor taste. Doesn't really add anything to any debate.

yes i agree lg theres to much of this irresponcible behaviour going on with parents

and with concerning the bringing up training of dogs.

i new a bloke going back a good few years ago now and he used to breed.

rottys he had always got 2 with him and thats off the lead in our local park

and they was probably the best trained and most well behaved dogs i have ever seen.

of course this guy wasnt a chav he was a really nice well mannerd bloke who obviously loved his dogs

and i think theres the difference.

paddy.

I own a rottie mysef and it is the most loving dog we have had (2 1/2 years old had from pup), she is great with our children and all our friends children(Age gap from 9months to 15 years)its not the dogs fault but the owners that make a dog a dangerous one, it's the same with HUMANS we are all born roughly the same but it's our parentes/upbringing that make us what we are and some just dont have a chance do they (What would people say to banning Chavs from having kids so that they can't terrorise the public). So leave these so called dangerous dogs alone and hit out at the owners, that said I am sure there are many more reports of smaller dogs bitting the general public but that won't sell papers will it

They are a danger to the public and should be banned, even if the vast majority of owners are decent law-abiding people.

Why should anyone be allowed to own these dangerous things, and how many more children must die or be injured before they are banned.

Now where have I heard all this before…… …….oh yes ……I remember.

Trouble is there ARE bad dogs! one of my mates had a rottie called it rocky? big bloody thing it was and it was his pride and joy, totally under my mate ernie's control pampered like kid not "taught "aggression at all, it lived in the house with him and his wife and as said was well behaved and a proper pet although the lecky or gas man never got in to read a meter (there lies a tale)

Till one day said rocky must have been having a bad day decides for no apparent reason that it fancied a taste of ernie's left arm ripping that much out ernie suffered nerve damage and had to have plastic surgery, oh and the only way he could stop the dog attacking was to beat it to death with a crow bar, fortunately ernie worked for himself doing bangers up and flogging them on and was in his workshop attatched to his house when the nice doggy decided it wanted to kill him so ernie had the chance to grab the crowbar, now ernie is about six two and maybe 16 clem and was physically able to get the dog subdued had it been his wife and the attack was in the house away from him it would probably have killed her. now ernie has no "nice doggies" and advocates that rotties etc should be caged and treated like other dangerous animals ie fed through the bars of a cage in a zoo?

cheers KW

you've cracked it Frank no matter how much people say its entirely the owner that isn't true. There are lines bred from that influence the temperament and use of a dog. Take my Jack Russels I've never taught them to go ratting yet they do and do it very well. Mine come back yet I know a lot who have very good owners with perfectly well behaved Labs etc who have JRT's that clear off rabbiting and only come back when they want to. The same applies to an extent with these dogs that have been bred along the line to fight or protect it sits there at the back of their brain and can be switched on by human influence and you get the odd one that switches on on its own. They are big and powerfull and as soon as they show a sign of turning on humans are a liability to keep unless you fancy muzzling them at all times.

There is the obvious problem of children round them where a Jack Russel would nip a Pit bull will kill whether its down to Jealousy about the kids having their masters time or simply the kids annoying them. I've no time for them having seen a lot back in the 1990's that were waiting to be put down I'd not trust one at all.
