Part of my business is catering and we often come across people with dairy and gluten allergies and others, packaging should state contents for people to aware of, in case of allergies, my point is that for the first 50yrs of my life i was unaware of this problem and believed that all natural foods in moderation were good for you, are these allergies real or a money spinners for the health food industry, i should point out that I'm 123yrs old without allergies (that i know of!)

That's the thing with allergies, you don't know you are allergic until you try it,

People die from nut allergies,

My Great nephew has a gluten allergy/issue, can't keep down anything gluten wise,

A friend of mine recently spent 3 weeks in hospital after being given Morphine for the first time, when asked if he had any allergies after collapsing in pain in the street he said not that he knew of, paramedic gave him morphine and bang.

Hospital did loads of tests before finding out it was morphine he was allergic to.

So yes, in answer to your question, allergies are real.

Many kids suffer dairy and / or soya allergies but grow out of it by about 3yrs, so I was told by the specialists dealing with my son. And, hey, the good news is they were right!

I also heard recently on the radio of a University study further suggesting that food allergies can be treated by introducing, over time, very small amounts of whatever it is causing the issue. They reckoned that if people did this they could get rid if their allergies, but it seems that, instead, they simply avoid the foodstuffs for the rest of their lives, so will never get over it. And I wonder if this sensitivity then gets passed on? It feels like we have more allergies now than ever before.

When I was young back in olden times we never had all of these allergy's but in recent years I have found myself becoming allergic to things and I tend to think that there is more to it than just being allergic to something there has to be something that is behind it could be something in plastic containers leaching in to our food and drink or it could be weed killers used on farms even down to fumes from diesel cars/trucks something is affecting our immune system.

Whilst there are many genuine allergies, I have doubt that they have in some ways become fashionable (I mean certain food allergies e.g. gluten not wasps or penicillin etc).

I personally feel that some of the food allergies may have origins nowadays that weren't present years ago, I also think that advances in medicine and diagnostic science has pinpointed illnesses, rather than them being a 'syndrome' of symptoms.

We once had to keep the 'humours' in balance..........

I drank a pint of milk just about every day but about 2 years ago i was suffering from a terrible stomach i had tests and found i had become lactose intolerant, so now normal milk is out, soya milk tastes rubbish and lactose free milk is just palatable.

I am also allergic to tramadol, imagine the scene in the exorcist(vomit) ,and you will get the idea of how bad it gets.

And strangely if you stick an elastoplast on me within a few hours i develop blisters under the plaster, this was discovered when i had a 12 inch by 6 inch plaster on my shoulder blade after an operation,it had to be taken off after one day because of the burning sensation and that is when they discovered the massive blisters, nothing makes you scream like a girl as blisters being torn off your back with the plaster.

Maybe some of them are intollerances rather than allergies but I believe they do exist.

I used to love brazil nuts, one day I bought some chocolate covered brazil nuts while we were on a field trip on Anglesey. My throat swelled up and started itching it was a very unpleasant experience. I've tried eating them a few times after that because I wasn't sure if it was real but it's the same every time. Also Macadamia nuts do the same thing but not the rest of them.

Many allergies take years to manifest themselves though, you can be unaware but over time your bodies reaction gets worse and worse.

My daughter's got a nut allergy that could kill her, she carries Epi pens everywhere.

This is an increasing problem, the nurse who took us through the epi-pen drills said there are about 100 kids a year being

prescribed them.

My wife avoided nuts during her pregnancies and I wonder if this is part of the problem? Should all pregnant women

be eating everying that can cause potential allergies?

My eldest daughters friend is said to be one of the most Allergic people in the country and is part of a few different studies (the tiny amount thing for her had to be dropped as they cannot make it tiny enough, she was very brave sticking with it until her life was under real threat). I credit her courage and while still in her teens already she has had a few close calls.

I personally have an intolerance to dairy, this is different from a full blown allergy it wont kill me and is unlikely to put me in hospital but by crickey it certainly makes me unwell and quite fast ( I get camps then massive and repetitive runs, literally like I have dysentery) , like in a restaurant I wont get to leave before it hits, something as simple as butter on the veg or in a sauce. Frankly it bugs the heck out of me when people think I am faking it or being faddy. I developed this later in life its certainly not a don't like thing there are many things I still fancy but know I cannot eat. If the OP has the "faddy fashion view" I suggest its time to look for another line of work or except it and cash in like a lot have, to play fast and loose might well kill someone. Some will never get it My mother in law never will and over tries and she has known of it for over 20yrs and still thinks I cannot have gluten and about 1/2 dozen things that I can then puts cream on something. Her own youngest daughter will pass out if she has strong chocolate or coffee again that is an intolerance not an allergy but the result is non the less pretty dramatic.

Most people are unable or are not aware of the difference between an allergen and an irritant .. in some instances at their cost, medically.

The most common one we come across is .. lm unable to take Penicillin, it upsets my stomach and causes a rash ... thats an irritant issue .. the benefit of the Penicillin far outweighs the uncomfortable side effect. As opposed to the fact the Pencillin is fighting, for instance, Meningitis.

People default to things being an Allergen too readily. It ideally needs to be clincally diagnoised as such. Yes there are occasions the diagnosis is impossible to obtain prior eg .. unexplained reaction etc

Some people deny themselves, albeit probably unintentionally the best forms of treatment, through over eagerness to claim clinically unproven allergies susception.

Your not alone, if in doubt don't is best advice. Pre-packed sandwiches can be especially bad and certain margarines that actually contain buttermilk (cant believe its not butter- because it flaming well is 50% of the time)

Like this?

I have an allergy to Labradors (no other breed, or I have yet to come across it), seriously, oh and cats.

My inner lower arms come out in a rash, feel sneezy and get itchy eyes if I stroke and pet one and my inner arm come into contact or if I touch my eyes after stroking one.
