super sharp shooter
There are a few estates that need to be avoided, but clean and tidy with a couple of good gun shops close by.

KFC
Milton Keynes was a pub and six houses when I was a lad and my Grandad was a Gamekeeper. I was brought up in a nearby village. When they burned out Moulsoe wood, which had never been touched since the days the Dinosaurs ruled the earth, then decided it was unsuitable for development and turned it into a Site of Special Scientific Interest then my Grandad said he'd love to meet Lord Carrington, the landowner, and shake him warmly by the throat. In the sixties there was one light on the horizon, Newport Pagnell Church. Then came a single string of lights for the M1. Now the whole place is ablaze with light as far as the eye can see. Oh well, that's progress.
aris
It is a 'modern/new' city and from what I recall, it was modelled and planned to be like a US city. Even the main roads are suffixed with Boulevard and they are dead straight roads. They took a bit more care when planning MK - for instance, they have cycle/running paths which are totally separate from roads for cars. They have good shopping - and the city is also car friendly (unlike some places). You don't have to travel that far to find countryside/farms either.\ Not a place I would like to live as i'm settled where I am and it is a bit far out of London. Like any place, take a visit and have a look. Not sure what it is like now, but you used to get alot of house for your money in comparison to the home county towns closer to London Edited March 2, 2014 by aris
lord_seagrave
Lady S got a job there 3 1/2 years ago. We moved to a rented cottage in Hanslope (a village about 6 miles north of MK) for a while, and, nearly three years ago, we bought a house in Wolverton, a 19th Century town on the northern fringes of the city. Having lived for a long time in London, we found MK itself to be quite soulless. However, I commuted to London daily (physically easy, but financially hard) and Lady S worked long hours, so we didn't really get to see much of the place! I got made redundant at the end of January, and so I've had more time to appreciate this part of the world recently. The canalside walks are a treat, and the countryside around MK get surprisingly rural surprisingly quickly (although you're never far from the hum/roar of the M1 and A5). As it happens, we 'll be selling our house in April/May to move back to London, so feel free to PM me if you need any more info. LS

Zetter
Nothing wrong with it. There are some estates to avoid like most large towns but as long as you check with someone who knows the area these can be avoided. The thing is even from the central areas you are about 15 mins from the countryside tops, all of my permissions are within a 30minute drive of my house . If you cycle you don't generally have to hit a road to get anywhere as there are cycle paths everywhere. Getting about by car is great once you get to know the area as all the roads are on a grid so if one is shut by an accident you just drop down one and don't get delayed by much. Generally speaking the rougher estates tend to be near the city centre with the nicer ones further out. If you have the cash you can opt to live in one of the villages on the outskirts of MK proper and have the best of all the facilities with a village setting but property prices are that bit higher say 25-50% of what you would pay on the standard decent city estates. I come from one of the smaller villages outside Milton Keynes but to be fair live one of estates now and its great little cul de sack and the kids are in a couple of really high performing schools in the area which I have been most impressed with. I would like to move back to one of the villages at some point when I can afford it but this is because I am a village lad at heat but I cant complain about where we live at all nice neighbours, good schools and good healthcare from my own experience. If you need any specifics answering on the estates to watch out for just let me know its not many but there are a couple I would avoid like the plague. Cheers Neil
Imperfection
MK is another of the places i have to visit when working and one thing which does work well is the road network.Hardly ever see traffic jams even in the shopping centre part. The housing estates are well laid out and look plsant enough to the eye,but unaware if there are any unsavoury areas. Bletcley just up the road has few dodgy areas though.
Longchalk
Ah.. . Milk 'n' Beans... As we call it over Northampton way... Parking in the centre is worthy of a whole series on the Kryton Factor.. Apart from that it seems Ok to me, albeit in in very decentralised, souless kinda way. bruno22rf
I don't mind MK -I think that the planners have done a fair job in the centre and the night life is good. Some of the surrounding areas can be a little tardy but there are plenty of small villages within spittin distance if you want peace and quiet. woodcock11
Milton Keynes just HAS to become a hot topic..... 1 . Hit IKEA there in 2006 to buy light bulbs - just great - and before they opened in Belfast. 2. If you have won the lottery and owe your other half for shooting too much, PARIS HOUSE at Woburn produces a good dinner - Michelin * and you can see the deer from the windows as it is on the Woburn Estate. Friends have taken us there not once but twice
PhilR
I've lived in MK since 1995, it was convenient because my wife's company HQ relocated here then and I had a nationwide travel remit for work. Luton airport was convenient for travel to Scotland and Northern Ireland. We were originally on the SW outskirts but further development has meant we've become surrounded. There's plenty of green open space, within 1/4 of a mile of my house there's ancient woodland mentioned in the Doomsday Book. Centre MK is the covered shopping mall with daily extended shopping hours and a good range of shops. I think there's a store of every supermarket chain here. MK was originally designed around car transport with a lot of free carparking in the city centre. Successive local councils have since eroded this as they've seen it as a cash cow. Local bus services seem to have improved in the light of the backlash against motorists but I've yet to see the inside of a bus here. As has already been mentioned some areas are better than others and the generalisation that those nearest the city centre are not quite so 'nice' is possibly true. There's a good train service from MK into London Euston or northwards to Birmingham and beyond. Adjacent to Centre MK is the Theatre district with a variety of chain restaurants and pubs. There's the Snowdome and also a multi screen cinema and nightclubs. I don't suppose MK is any better or worse than any large conurbation, they all have good and bad parts if you look closely enough. The knockers of MK aren't usually residents but those who like to poke fun at the concrete cows. Sent from my phone with fingers bigger than keys so excuse spelling. halfbee
Mk has the requisite quantity and density of trees to be designated a forest.

wymberley
Just this minute got back from a flying visit to see new grandson. Son is quite happy there - one gripe is tyre wear - it seem the roundabouts cause havoc.
old rooster
Lived there for a while many years ago in one of the roughest estates there....Netherfield!!. Lakes Estate is another to avoid! I always look back on it as a bit of life experience, it was a means to an end at the time but I'd not like to have to go back to that! LOL There are a few pretty dodgy areas and some that aren't so bad, like most city type places. The city centre is a pretty bland sort of shopping precinct with parking a nightmare. Having lived in and around the general area all my life it is pretty sad to see all the once pleasant little villages being absorbed as the city continues to sprawl outwards. There sure are plenty of roundabouts so as Wymberley mentioned above tyre wear can be a tad excessive!
