AVB
I think you have to look at songwriter/lyricist combinations and IMHO Bacharach/David take some beating.

I like Paul Simon and some of the new singer song writers are very good. Figgy I take it you weren't including Paul Simon as not one of the best performers? Simon and Garfunkel, particularly in the mid sixties when they were at the height of their powers, set a benchmark for live performance musicianship which few have matched. They were flawless. Trevorevans
Eh, some blokes who performed as Pink Floyd need a mention here. Have a look at the lyrics of "Time". +1 Also Bob Dylan, Shane McGowan, Derrick ***** (aka Fish), Chris Diffiord, Paul Heaton, Lily Allen. I could go on. Some songs are about the lyrics and what they mean/mean to you, other songs are just about the music/tune. Love Ac/Dc for their music but love Dylan for his lyrics if you know what I mean.
