Paul taylor
thought id take inspiration from Jesus and rise early today Was on the farm for 4.40 see if I could bag a bunny before first light but it wasn't happening as none where in a place I could stalk into air rifle range so I moved onto my main target for the day the magpies. These made me look stupid a couple of weeks ago having not had the decency to let me know they had changed their habits I set up a hide near a sitty tree they used to use every morning only for them all to fly straight past me and onto the milking parlour so I've been itching to do another early start and get my own back. I took one frozen maggie I got last wk with the 12g and put it on a fence post then got laid down up a banking where he stores silage under a cammo net and watched the world wake up rabbits pheasants wagtails all totally unaware I was laid watching I had a female blackbird beak full of worms sit cleaning her beak on a branch 4ft away wonderful to watch. the first magpie landed too close only 4ft away and behind me then it all went right. I dropped 2 off the post the decoy was on then 3 off the roof at various ranges before a final one at only 10m on the floor next to a dead one so today was mine! Only 5 in pic as one stuck on roof, will have another go when I can get as still plenty about, also loads of jackdaws today so shotgun will get a go when kids go back to school an I can get out for the day. happy hunting to you all P.T

Paul taylor
Thanks for the comments gents I love shooting magpies no matter whether its with the noisy sxs or my favoured silent assassin the air arms s510. Really intelligent birds but their curious and aggressive nature can make them easy to sucker in once you know their habits/territory. Looking forwards to more mornings like today also want to get down at night as I found quite a few rat holes in the banking with fresh digging and droppings so another job for the s510 and NV gear Atb P.T

You've got to know what you're doing to make them "easy to sucker in" and have much success. As such, that was a great result.
Bleeh
I might be miles off the mark here, so someone will have to correct me.I'm not 100% sure (more like 50%) but isn't using NV gear against the terms of the general license for everything but feral pigeon?Don't feel I'm nit-picking (Dead magpies are good magpies as far as I'm concerned) I just don't want you getting in trouble. Respect your question though. Atb P.T
Underdog
That is a good effort Sir, getting rid of those wretched things is praise worthy. I escorted my wife to the cemetery today....it was full of them and crows and squirrel. I am finding the temptation to smuggle my catties in hard to resist! Cheers Underdog I've still not managed to squeak a magpie in yet im full of cold so struggling to make any noises other than snot related ones :( Know what u mean with birds in the cemetery the temptation is huge, I seem to be being haunted by wood pigeons lately they are everywhere except where I can legally shoot them thats why the corvids are getting battered! Paul taylor
Hi Paul what NV unit is that , how far can you clearly see rabbits to shoot with it . atb terry hi Terry. Its a yukon nvrs titanium 2.5x50 with doubler lens. I reckon I get eyes out to about 100m but only positive id of rabbits at about 60/70m with built in ir on your average night so probably ok for 22rf maybe not so for hmr but I only have sub 12ft/lb air so ok for me. Im currently waiting for an ir torch to turn up hoping it will allow me to spot at longer range so I can start my stalks earlier and spook less. Atb matey.
