Hard Work at the Weekend

Recommended Posts

Tuesday I had a phone call that the crows were eating the peas, I drove over to the field to find approx twenty crows in one corner . I walked across the field to find that the crows were pulling the peas out of the ground to get the wire worms off the growing plant . The pea seeds were all in neat rows just waiting for the pigeons to come a pick them up. We could not get to the field till Friday and had a good scan of the field only to find ten birds in the corner that the crows had been. We watched it for a good twenty minutes and a few birds started to join , so we decided to set up. After an hour it was pants as nothing had come back so we moved on and kept looking. After forty miles we found another pea field with a few birds down one edge , we watched this for ten minutes and it had birds flighting the length of the field so we set up. It was now 11.00 and we set up with 12 thawed birds , ten on spikes and two on the magnet we shot till 18.00 and picked up one hundred and twelve birds, which was a brilliant result .

Saturday , we headed out looking for more seeding , and ended up at the field we shot last week on the bean seed when we arrived it had eleven birds on it and none joining so we carried on. We looked at three pea fields none with any birds on them or even flying around. We had a phone call from Bunny Blaster who was on the first bean field we looked at and invited us to shoot the other end of the field , I said if we could not find any we would come back. We complete one hunred and forty miles retracing our steps to see if we were missing the birds and at 16.30 ended up on the bean seed . Bunny Blaster had left and I left a message on his phone asking how he got on . We set up as before ten on spikes and two on the magnet , we were facing the setting sun with the wind in our faces , not the ideal position, but that was the flightline in the field. Bunny Blaster phoned back and came out to join us, not shooting just listening to the banter between DB and myself, he had shot seven earlier. It was amazing as we would see a bird in the distance and he would identify it before we could ie Stock Dove or Woody ( Young Eyes). We ended the day at 18.00 and picked up eleven pigeon and three crows and Jackdaws. We had been driving for seven and a half hours looking for Pigeon and we were amazed that the sky was devoid of birds, but that Pigeon Shooting>

With the amount of miles you do looking for the birds your success is well earned , I would hate your fuel bill though !.

The pigeon certainly do not seem interested in the peas just yet , my grand total for this week was 11 .

Just the same as last year I am scratching my head wondering when I will again get a decent chance.
