Dog in the hide

Recommended Posts

if im shootin all day, i will take water and dog food..........i wouldnt tip bit a dog in the hide....as it would possibly get the dog to drop the birds in its haste to get back to food........remember that a dogs reward is being in the hide with you ....

in the early days my dogs were all hyper to begin with and they were on screw leads......they will settle...just keep on at them.....

Loud bangs from shotguns don't put them off, therefore.....................

Does anyone tip bit there dog in the hide as im thinking of doing it for the next time I'm out or does it put pigeons of the sound of him crunching ona biscuit?

Daft question I know but its also to keep the dog content while not shooting

The only reward a dog should need is a retrieve , though if I am going for a long day I will give mine the odd biscuit and I always take plenty of water.

As for the noise of it eating a biscuit are you serious ? pigeon may have good eyesight / hearing but considering any that come within 40 yards or so should be dead if your pigeon can hear a dog eating at 40 yards they are more highly developed than the ones in the uk , I have never had a problem while eating my crisps

I wouldn't have thought a pigeon would hear a dog eating a biscuit if they do dip them in your coffee first

Hi, you did not say what type of dog you had as some will sit content in hide more than others. I have a gsp for example that I originally used for hunting with birds of prey and he like spaniels despite being well trained always seem to be fighting there nature and want to be running around and working the hedge rows. It's like having a coiled spring sitting next to you. The noise concern with the biscuits would make no difference at all, it's movement in hide you don't want- no jumping through hoops for treats

If you having issues its because you dint train for it. Been working on the dog settling by laying out between my legs facing away as last season he kept trying to sit close on my left hand side like we do on eve flight. MM, food? yep I give the dog a feed in the hide while shooting but the last thing I want is nudges and prompts from him so no not in training.

Was rather hoping I could get to throwing a cover over us as consealment with the above laid in a muddy hole hole position, but we aint got there quite yet.

If I sit the dog don't need telling he will come and sit with me, if I lie out then I am looking for the same automatic resonse.

Sorry my dog is well trained labrador I was just wanting to know whether I should give him tip bits through the day in the hide just to keep him going

If you need to feed it tip bits to keep it content i'd say its not as well trained as you might think.

My lab just lays down and goes to sleep, whether its the pigeon hide, woods or marsh. She knows not to bother getting up when i fire as shot as i've probably missed!

And when you do shoot something my dog picks it for you 😃

I would say it depends on how much work the dog has done or the circumstances. When my dogs been in the beating line all morning I give her a small amount of her food at the same time as I have my dinner. If I pick up and shes not had to work quite so hard she may just get a few bits. In a pigeon hide when its warm she would get nothing. When we have done the morning flight on the marsh and shes been wet and working she gets about a third of her daily allowance when she gets home. its a long day until 6pm from 2am for her after a hard morning flight. I hope this helps.
