sako751sg
Been busy through the early buck season but still picked away although the growth grew very quickly and restricted stalking and shots.Thought the heeds could have been better this year after the mild winter but they were average at best which just shows theres a few other factors involved too.Highlight was finally getting a big old fella who i had saw for the last 3 years and in his prime was possibly the biggest buck ive ever seen, both in heed and body.He was in very poor condition and a shadow of his former self so was great to grass him and end the suffering. Have left more bucks this year and left some places near enough untouched so will b e interesting to what appears next season. After a winter of leaks and sodden ground we managed to get the digger doon and restructured the pond. Also cleaned the ditch up above and its allowing loads more water in than we thought there would be so plenty to keep the fush happy.Have around 40 broonies and 2 bows in it and its fine sitting watching them rising.Had a cast for the first time last week and had one of each which again was great.Unbelievable variety of wildlife at it and it just shows what a wee bit of water can do.Also collected some sticklebacks and caddis and snail covered stones from a couple of burns and transferred to the pond so that will add to the food source. The top pond which was planned for the ducks has only a couple of teal coming which is strange as the mallard were regular for a while but have sacked it.Hopefully they reappear but who knows? Going round cleaning oot the farmers driers the now and feeding the other ponds with it.The other 3 ponds have plenty ducks coming in,a mix of teal and mallard which is spot on.Luckily we had a good splash of rain in August which filled them and although we dont usually shoot before October we might have an evening this week. Fushing has been very poor and even with the rain since August fish have been minimal.Did manage an 11 1/2lb salmon but apart from a few sea troot thats been it from the river.Heres hoping for a better back end and a bit of water. Was up to Golspie for a week in July and managed to shove in a few days on the lochs which was productive although pretty hard work.Majority of them involve a fair old walk but well worth it and the weather was roasting.Midges were a major problem and worst ive seen. Had a drive to the Falls Of Shin and it was stuffed with fush of all sizes and all colours.Lack of water at that time and there was good build up trying to make it up. Also had a walk up to the Duke Of Sutherlands statue. Some feat to build it where it is although they quarried the stone only 80ish metres away but still a fair job.Great view at the top and would recommend the walk up if anyone is up that way. Took a trip up the hill last friday and managed 2 stags. The place was alive with roaring with 7 stags coming from our front and 2 flanking the left.It was supposed to be Mac shooting but with the low light and distance he wasnt keen so fair dues to him.The 2 from the left came to 247m and both shots was bang on.Managed to get the motor right up to them so nay drag at all.The rut should just have started so might manage more before the end.
