henry_o
Hi guys, I'm looking for a shotgun for myself. It doesn't have to be brand new; second hand is fine. I currently shoot a Beretta 686 and sometimes my brothers Bettinsoli. However, neither of these fit well. I end up with a bruise on my cheek quite often. I need something with a higher stock/rib to shoot consistently well. I had a bag of 70 pigeons on wednesday this week and still have a purple bruise below my cheek bone. I've used the same gun for the past decade and about time to sort this out now. Can anyone suggest something designed for awwkard people like me? I'm left handed too if that's an issue with some models? Thanks, Henry
Shooterluke
I would suggest mate that you go to a try before you buy place and shoot a few i think it would ve hard for some one on here to say what gun to get an also if your getting 70 birds it sounds like its shooting where you look could it be down to a bad gun mount ? wj939
Unless your not of average build or arm and neck length it may be poor mount not fit. And as most guns are relatively similiar in average stock dimensions you may not benefit from the change. Assuming your gun is left handed and you shoot off the left shoulder? It sounds like the comb is too tight to your face. Bare in mind the comb height near your thumb is higher than further back. There should be about 2 fingers width between your nose and tip of the comb. How does yours measure?
Scully
Berettas do this to me also, but luckily I've always preferred Browning/Miroku/Winchester anyhow, which don't slap me. Perhaps you could try one of these at a clay ground?

figgy
If you've put up with this for a decade I'd suggest you see your doctor, your nuts. Seriously unless your going for an adjustable combed stock you need to try them. I've held guns and thought that fits nice, then fired it and got slapped in the face off it. Angle of the heel/but plate all factor how a gun shoots for you. Figgy
HDAV
Your lifting your head off the stock IMHO not gun fit Why is he lifting his head? Probably because the gun doesn't fit! Adjustable comb is one option, or a gun/stock with higher comb also if the LOP is too long with a dropping comb you may be lifting your head, recoil is another factor what sort of recoil pad does it have? See how the comb slopes down towards the butt current 686 sporter Compare to the MK60 universal which drops less Simply you need to go and shoot some preferably with someone who knows what to look for and isn't going to profit from a purchase. welshwarrior
Miroku tends to have less drop than a beretta but get someone to look at shoot before you part with lots of cash.
sishyplops
Be careful of going for the automatic get a comb raiser , as if you have a long neck this will push your head up straight which is a good thing , but may make your sight plane way too high so you see far too much rib, get to a gunsmith not a gunshop and get them to have a look then get a gun fitted Edited November 9, 2014 by sishyplops

henry_o
It does depend on the angle of the shot. I'm 25 now and relatovely thick set. As a teen I was fairly lanky and the beretta fitted. I don't seem to get my head down on certain angled shots. Driven game is fine. It seems to be when pigeon shooting (generally low or flat angles) it seems to happen. So it's not a case of lifting my head. I just don't think it gets there properly in the first place. I heard Brownings generally have a higher comb. But no experience using one yet. Don't worry, I'm not going to go out and grab a gun straight away. Whatever I look at will be tried out prior to purchase. I have high cheek bones which don't help my situation. henry_o
Also I'm still hitting the birds so it's not like I'm up miles away off the stock or anything to a massive scale. But when I do miss a bird i start thinking it's because my gun doesn't fit and get annoyed and it affects confidence when shooting. HDAV
If it were closer I would have been very tempted I have 2 in cabinet that haven't been out for a nearly a year!!! If I was right handed and closer I would have been all over that like a tramp on hot chips!
a303
I used to suffer with a bruised cheek using o/u. Autos never bothered me. Since moving to a o/u with a adjustable stock, set up as parallel comb the problems solved. I've put it down the the front of the comb recoiling backward into the most forward part of my cheek. Now the way it's set it allows it to slide past my cheek rather than into my cheek. Hope any of this rambling helps!
retromlc
go get a gun fit, then look for a gun with those measurements or get a gun with an adj comb so you can set it to them.

Go to someone who knows how to fit a gun. Pay them some money and come away with your beretta fitting you and money in your pocket compared to the alternative of buying a new gun. .... then spend that money on a semi auto... ChrisAsh
Second that its a gun fit you need even after 10 years you change your style without noticing, so go to a good gun fitter and get fitted to what you have then at least you have the measurements for a future gun if you are still not happy with what you have You could also come down on the load or change cartridges which may give a softer shot
henry_o
Thanks for the input everyone. All on board. What should be a reasonable price to pay for a fitting session?
welshwarrior
Depends where and who you go to.
