pigeon controller
We wenrt out Friday looking for seed especially beans as we thought the birds had been on the rape too long and would be looking for a different food source before they pair up and disappear into the woods feeding on the new sweet buds.Having looked at a few seed fields we noted that the modern seed drill is far to efficient and was not leaving any food on the surface. We stopped to see the eclipse and then carried on to a forty acre block of rape and saw about two hundred birds lift off from the far edge, so we watched it for a good thirty minutes noting the flight lines in and the numbers returning. We contacted the farmer and set up. In the first hour four returned in the next half hour none returned so we moved on. It was getting on now and we found another field with a few down so decided to give it a go, we had twelve decoys on cradles as low as we could and waited, it was now 14.00 and we had a steady number of birds return and visit the decoys and they just kept comming. We shot till 18.15 as we knew we were close to a ton but we had to settle for a hard earned eightynine , which was more than we thought we would have at the start of the day.We had covered seventy miles. Saturday was a frosty start and we found birds on pony paddocks and gardens feeding on clover but they were all split over various grass fields. We found a good flock on some clover and drove down to see the reaction and they just upped and went . We checked four rape farms but could not see a good number down. On the fifth farm we found a few on the rape but just as many on the paddocks next to it. We had not shot this field for at least six weeks and we knew it was an afternoon field so as time was getting on we set up with just twelve fresh birds from the day before all on cradles in the growwing rape.It was now 14.30 and the birds started to return. It was a difficult field to shoot as the wind was a north easterly / westerly so we had the wind off our backs and the sun in our eyes, which made it difficult shooting . We shot till 18.00 and picked up the shot birds which totalled one hundred and eighteen and we had coverd ninety miles. So it was a cracking weekend. yickdaz
business as usual it still amazes me how you set up at 2.30pm with 12 dead birds and bag a ton there still on the rape around here but not in any numbers worth bothering with not a lot of drilling been done in these parts loads to go in yet

Well done, ST, the birds STILL seem to be too flocked up round here to really get amongst them. You've managed to not rub salt in the wounds too much, with a paltry 200+ aggregate score for the two days. Better luck next time!

JDog
Very fine going. Others have reported continued success on rape. Perhaps drillings are not all they are cracked up to be.

We used to shoot a farm that would broadcast seed and then harrow it in which was a superb farm to shoot, happy days.

I have found that good days on fresh drill can still be had, even when there is very little/no seed to be found. Usually the window for this particular shoot is very small - you must be there on the only day that will be productive.

Yes I agree, the old adage " Make Hay when the sun shines " , if you see them shoot them, tomorrow is a different day.
pigeonandy
you have a proper talent for finding and then decoying the birds, and you must know your way around a 12g too, the birds around the east Anglia parts seem to be spread out far and wide although I did manage 77 Saturday on a flight line, that's the best 2015 bag for me so far but I shoot around 6 thousand a year on average so ive got to up the game. just out of interest how many thousand a year do you shoot pigeoncontroller? all the best and keep up the great work, being a farmer I know the damage they cause. andy

What I'm really confused about is how come you managed to buy the only disco that keeps going when you do so many miles, is it being prepped all week, ready for your weekend exploits? Regards. JBS
I'm sure this has been asked before pc but to save me searching, did you make the net you use yourself? It seems to blend very well with every background
pigeon controller
I'm sure this has been asked before pc but to save me searching, did you make the net you use yourself? It seems to blend very well with every background I have reported this before, it's an ex MOD net in which I went down to the Asian Quarter and chose some sari material in various greens and browns which I cut in strips and have woven in the net. As I have it it is brown on one side a greener on the other so I can match the background. I hope this helps.
