ShootingEgg
Just read on bbc news about doombar and how its bottles are not filled with beer brewed in cornwall... How does this make a news story.. Someone better tell the bbc about foster advertising as an aussie beer when its brewed in the uk... Being an ex publican I knew they had expanded and were brewing outside of Cornwall. Just dont get why its such a big deal. Is it just me? Thunderbird
It used to be a nice pint back in the early days, but the last few I've had have been cack.

Id put that down to poor bar management rather than the beer. Its only the beer that goes into bottles thats not brewed in cornwall.
Dunkield
Quite like Doombar, up there with some of the better beers, and yes I would agree it's all about the management.
Thunderbird
I'll give it another go then in a decent place with it on draught.

Agreed, the Tim Taylor in my local Toby carvery is like toilet water yet in a local independent pub it's like nectar of the gods, a pub needs a proper landlord
Fatcatsplat
Landlord, Speckled Hen, Pedigree, Ruddles - All beers that have been compromised in quality by a takeover - Think SportsDirect and Lonsdale. With Doom Bar however, Sharp's appear to have changed their own recipe and made something yuk

secretagentmole
I used to really enjoy the ruddles but agreed thats cack now ! Down to Greene King that is. They turned into the very type of organisation that they campaigned so vigorously against in the 1980's.
hambone
Had it in weatherspoons a few weeks back, £1.65 a pint and not bad at all. Not as nice as the bottles tho.

With Doom Bar however, Sharp's appear to have changed their own recipe and made something yuk Ah - Old Speckled Hen, back in the day, that was a man's pint. Now, have it on draft and it's a feeble imitation of its past self. Greene King wanted Abbott as their big beer, and so relegated the Hen to an also-ran. It purely trades on its name these days, as far as I can see. LS Edit: grammer Edited June 18, 2015 by lord_seagrave
Mungler
I can't drink Doonbar any more as just to look at a pint gives me indigestion. Agree about Speckled Hen - it used to be a strong beer and on its own in a glass bottle. Now glass bottles are synonymous with 'ponce' and that amorphous band wagon that is 'craft beer'. I've been back to flat Guinness in a can, you know where you are with that.

Gordon R
Little stays the same. I remember getting legless on Newquay Steam Lager, when we were on holiday in St Ives - late 1980s. I was arm wrestling - pathetic really - with a power lifter from Nottingham, who suggested trying some. Is it still being brewed?
bruno22rf
Simply cannot see how anyone can enjoy Doonbar-watered down weasel wee would have more taste.
rimfire4969
The real problem with Sharps and Doombar is the company was bought in about 2012 by Molson Coors a huge American brewing firm with a turnover of $5,927.5 million in 2012. This is not a small Cornish brewery anymore, in our little shop we stock about 10 - 15 local beers, some from Skinners, St Ives brewery, Penpont brewery, Blackflag basically what ever takes our fancy that week. I refuse to sell Sharps beer now, Cornwall is a place fun of small brewery's making dam fine beer and I would rather support them than a huge company where the profit goes to the USA. norfolk dumpling
Adnams, Adnams, Adnams - again **** management can spoil it. Best on the Suffolk coast and even better when no tourists about.
Thunderbird
Now glass bottles are synonymous with 'ponce' and that amorphous band wagon that is 'craft beer'. Slippery slope too, next thing it's all big beards, leather bags, a superior air, and the riding of 'fixies'.
bruno22rf
Hobgoblin, Old Thumper and ESB are all bottled-I must be a ponce then I need a Beer.
Zapp
Now glass bottles are synonymous with 'ponce' and that amorphous band wagon that is 'craft beer'. Dont get me started. I've gone from being a real ale lover who was building up a microbrewery to a very occasional drinker largely because the whole shabang has been hijacked by ponces in skinny jeans and lumberjack shirts, hellbent on patronising all and sundry about beer - most of which either has some stupid ingredient added like peaches, making it taste nothing like beer, or just tastes of whatever the latest trendy hop happens to be. I just cant be bothered with it any more. British beer has been overtaken by American brewing trends. The small amount of really good quality ale we once had has now been drowned out by a tsunami of pale, over-hopped craft-wee, and the popular ones which were once good (ie Doombar) have become massive corporate brands on the back of the massively increased market, and have become dull imitations as a result. Worst of all, I note that the "craft beer" cancer has started to take hold in Germany, who still produce beers as fine as any real ale ever was. The only hope is that their beer purity laws will keep the worst excesses of stupidty at bay once everyone starts growning beards, wearing flat caps, and being generally loathsome. Thunderbird
Zapp - what would you recommend as still fairly decent in the UK nowadays, if one was on a beer-buying spree for home consumption?
secretagentmole
Thunderbird I would recommend a trip to the Blue Anchor in Helston and take a tanker with you! Spingo is wonderful stuff!
