Adnams, Adnams, Adnams - again **** management can spoil it. Best on the Suffolk coast and even better when no tourists about.

Broadside is pure heaven, but the standard bitter is nasty thin metallic stuff. London Pride is about as good as regular drinking draft beer gets. Not often you find somewhere where they can ruin it either. Seems to be pretty much idiot proof, unless it's too cold.

I've got a week in Southwold the home of Adnams coming up soon. Never done the brewery tour before.

The Sole Bay hear the lighthouse does the best Broadside i've ever tasted.

But you'll never, ever get a head on it for longer than 30 seconds.

Might be time for a PW return visit to the Fullers Brewery!!

I find it can be quite ordinary out our way, but we had a pub near us at work that did the best pint of Pride anywhere, and by that I mean even better than the pints we had before the Fullers tour.

Going back up the thread to the point about it is all in the handling, the manager responsible for that beer has now left that pub and moved onto the next one (previously deserted) down the road.

The original pub now does a fairly average pint of Pride, and appears to be suffering, his new pub now does excellent beers and is busier now than it has been for the last ten years.

And yes to another Fullers tour, although it would be difficult to replicate the messiness of the first one :|

You can't move for small breweries near where I live; Stroud, Wickwar and Uley to name three off the top of my head. I always take a barrel of the Stroud Organic Ale to the PW annual Cotswolds do, goes down a treat.

There are some talented brewers here on PW too, I've personally experienced several of Blunderbuss's brews and they were fantastic.

Again going back on topic, I always had the rule to order the real ale a pub sold of the most of, my theory being it would be the freshest. Same with Guinness, I would never order it from a pub the doesn't sell much of it.

Its summer-Aldi do a 660ml (that's 2 cans) bottle of San Miguel for £1.25-cheaper than water and refreshing if well chilled.

We are talking about real Beer not Lager!!! (however i do agree its a good price and will be grabbing some bottles when shopping tonight- thanks for the heads up)

I would be up for a PW Fullers Brewery tour. Agree about London Pride, never had a bad pint but have had some which were a lot better than the others, when its right its one of the best session beers around IMO.

Not one of my finest teaching experiences was taking a group of sixth formers for a Fullers Brewery tour. Ostensibly something to do with ICT (I don't remember what it was now), the tour was ok up to the point where were taken to the place where you watch a film and are given small glasses of their products. I watched the film and my charges had refill after refill and really enjoyed it. The worst of it was that as the minibus driver, I couldn't sample any at all but as we left, guy running the bar gave me a couple of carrier bags of bottles to take away.

My ale-drinking colleagues and I have a raised eyebrow look at each other when we see someone nursing a pint of Doombar. It tastes like Hofmeister.

It's popularity is due to investment rather than reputation or taste - much like Greene King. My Dad told me that Abbot was one of the best around in the 70's and you can still get the recipe for that original beer, but as a brewery now they're no different to any of the other commercial enterprises.

My top 5: In no particular order - don't make me choose

Timothy Taylor Landlord

Tring Brewery Side Pocket for a Toad

Hook Norton Hooky Bitter

Everard's Tiger

Highland Brewing Company Scapa Special

I'm a big fan of the low-end strength beers you can sink 5 of and not feel the after effects.

I'm lucky as we have a good local firm in Lewes called Harvey's Brewery. They make proper beer the propose way, and plenty of varieties. If you are ever in Sussex you should give Harvey's Armada a try, it's much better than their Best and a very good pint it is.

Yes, a nice drop. I put my name down for the brewery tour, so should get to see it by 2020. such is the popularity.

I also like Black Sheep brewery of North Yorkshire - another family-owned firm.

True, and I don't mind a cider or two. The local pub, 'Ring o Bell' does few Thatcher's ciders. I'll hunt around for some proper ol scrumpy too.

Tis summer and you'll be in cider country!!
Thatchers factory not a million miles from Chew or one of the numerous cider farms nearby

Everard's Tiger

My step-son's local in Newtown Linford keeps this. Always makes the trip up worthwhile.

Just done a visit to the Ringwood Brewery. Question - what do they put in the kegs to prevent secondary fermentation (SF)? Didn't know about this as when brewed the beer is to spec' but SF can make it go over strength and thus illegal if the Weights and Measures call in

Sounds funny, needs a lot of sugar in 2nd fermentation per gallon to make a big difference.

Now time to throw a spanner in the works.

John Smiths.

Magnet.

They actually do brew a real beer, best enjoyed looking over the harbour from the Duke of York windows in Whitby!

Edited to add:

Ignore the above, it is no longer brewed in Tadcaster, S&N have done a Greene King with it and it is no longer brewed there, it won;t be the same pint. They have loused another beer up!

Good beer is all about the locality, I think. It's 100 times better when the pub is close to the brewery and there's a high turnover of barrels.

Isinglass, is that the stuff?
