I am pleased with the result. It was democratically arrived at and the Greek people have spoken. Its going to cause big problems but the real problem was ever letting them in to start with. Clearly the totatlly undemocratic EU will be furious with the result but it only goes to show how weak the glue holding the whole house of cards togeather really is.

The EU is the Fourth Reich but without the tanks

When are we going to tell George where to stick his austerity measures?

I think you'll find as a nation we just gave George the big thumbs up, he's doing the job well considering what he had/has to work with

What austerity measures? I don't see any austerity in my day to day life?

Very true!

George has done a fine job up to now and deserves a pat on the back for not letting us go belly up BUT i think putting up council house rents up by 70quid a week for any Household earning 30k or more a year is a step way too far.Trouble ahead me thinks.

Why - it is long overdue. For the last 40 years or so I have lived on the edge of social housing but was never "poor enough" to qualify. I have seen families with 4 new cars on the front and expensive other accouterments living next to struggling single parent families, met folks on twice my wage living in good houses whilst I struggled to pay my mortgage.

This is the problem with social housing - many of those in it no longer need or qualify for it. 30k is a good wage, why should I subsidize it when I get less.

the eu do not like it

Let me make it very to clear here I am no fan of the EU at all.

But I'm not quite following that. Which part of that is Democracy in action?

Apparently Greece owes around £170 Billion in loans they requested and are refusing/can't pay back.

In simple terms the the EU is telling them to keep to their contract, stop spending money so fast, make some cutbacks and start repayments.

Greece got into Europe on a false set of accounts to start with and are now taking the **** out of Europe even more.

They should have been shown the door long ago but I expect the wimps in Europe will buckle and let them carry on taking the ****.

No way would we cripple our economy .... This Country is the 5 or 6 richest in the world. ( Just wish they would stop giving it away ).

Must admit i never understand how this all works

I read somewhere that greece is 575 million in debt which is 47K per person and 174% off GDP, BUT UK is 9.7 trillion, 160K per person and 400% off GDP in debt

Do find it hard to believe UK's not in more trouble.

Not going to say some people are not struggling but in reality we have never had it so good, everyone has a car fancy phone, big massive tv and very few folk will be genuinely struggling for food. But compared to wot previous generations had to live with even just 50-70 years ago we shouldnae really moan.

this is measured on 30k per houshold not 30k each.it will make my rent just under 700 quid a month, thats why its a step too far!!!its acridiculous amount for where i live.i have two kids a missus and we have one car,we dont both earn big money (30grand combined) which puts us in georges crosshairs. Its a big jump for us.If we were on 30k each then fair enough but it does my head in that were one of only 3 houses on our street that works when the rest are on the dole and they can afford to run 2 cars minimum and theyre always buying new gear for their houses and all payed for by our taxes.

George has to set the bar somewhere and folk who are on the bar limit are always going to feel it's them that are persecuted, however (I think) I can see the logic, if you earn enough to buy your own place then why live in subsidised housing, it creates a problem for George because the DSS end up paying over priced rent to landlords, whilst folk who could afford a mortgage take up valuable space, plus if those folk buy a place it'll add to the economy, and in the long run it'll most likely pan out better for the home owner. House prices will increase too. Good all round really.

why do you think they all want to come here,,probably to live in your street :lol:

with regards Greece,,, they should be made to pay the money they owe back, but more importantly those that gave the ok to lend them more should be out of a job

Hows about george getting folks off the dole to contribute, hows about george turfing out the hundreds of thousands of folk that shouldnt be here, hows about george binning foreign aid.Theres plenty that can be done before they hit the working man with a stick.BUT yet again those at the top dont have the balls to do it.

I wouldn't argue with that and I don't see anyone will be jumping for joy at the thought of having to pay more rent in these circumstances.

Just the same I know plenty of people who buy their own home and struggle to pay the mortgage on less than £30k.

The figure has been arrived at as being where you have a lifestyle choice rather than being in need of social help (whether you agree with that or not), so the counter argument is why are other taxpayers, many less well off than you and struggling themselves subsidising you?

You mention earlier it will make the rent too expensive for where you live, that being the case you may even get a reduction, the rents will change in line with market conditions, if they are true to their word many will go up, but some may even go down, and are being capped at £70 max increase I understand.

On the face of it, seems reasonable to me, but I don't expect anyone faced with an increase will agree!

Just another view from a taxpayer who has made his own way in life and supported many others along the way!

:good:

Don't know much about democracy, does that mean you can pick which colour pig to stick its nose in the trough?

Because in its literal form ,does it not mean we have a say in the running of our nation?

When was the last time you were asked to vote on something other than which pig you wanted?

When was the last time you saw/spoke to your MP?

Oh yes ,when he knocks on your door to get your vote silly.

And austerity? Does that mean raising taxes, cutting services, lowering pensions?

I haven't seen much of that round my way.

What I have seen is huge building projects, lots of social housing being revamped/modernised,tram extensions using council money to help build them.

I see lots of big ,new ,expensive cars.

What I see is government spending,so ,austerity ?

If someone can explain how we are paying our massive debt I would appreciate it.
