ditchman
pics' 5 & 6............5 shows the head of the boost housing off with all the gubbins (tecknicol word there).........out.........one thing you must remember is the order of the springs as if you look closely you will see that they are different strengths one sits either side of the diaphram...........the shaft (the round rod)......is in contact with the boost diaphram thro to the fuel rack in the body of the pump....pic 6 shows where it goes before i drop it into position..............(or usually on the bloody floor)
ditchman
Pics 7 & 8...............7 shows the rod fully into the housing ............and 8 shows the re-assembly...

ditchman
Pics 9 & 10 show the re-assembly with diaphram in place just before the head goes back on............this repair can be done whilst it is on the vehicle....its fiddly but can be done......... ditchman
Pics' 11 & 12...............now comes the clever bit............pic 11 shows the Turbo-charger which is connected to the injection pump by way of an air line...............the air line runs from the "boost diaphram .."AIR"..........to the inlet turbine housing...(compressor fan)...in pic 11 i have disconnected the "tee" piece pipe and stuck my oxy/acty touch into it and set the pressure on the gauge to 3-4lbs/sq"...............this pipe is connected to "The acuator"..........(a solenoid)...something that changes energy....electricity/fluid/air....into lateral movement........the actuator is connected to the "wastegate" via a linkage...............see pic 12................
ditchman
pics 13 & 14...............pic 12 shows the acuator...before air pressure has been introduced and pic 13 shows the "throw" of the linkage onto the wastegate..........pic 14 shows the actuator..........i needed to do this test as actuators and turbo's if under used can get sticky after a while.. ditchman
ssoooooo....this is where the air goes in.............and in the simplest of terms................when you put you foot on the accelerator it increases the fuel going into the cylinder but because there is not enuff air:fuel ratio...it is ineficient...and the semi combusted fuel continues to expand exiting the cylinder....this super expanding exhaust increases the speed of the turbine which draws more air from the compressor....but we have reached an impass.........we need more fuel....as the compressor compresses more air it pressurizes the compressor chamber.....that extra pressure exits the chamber via a "tee peice" screwed into the housing....one line goes of to the "boost diaphram" which pushes that rod into the pump body and slighty overides the fuel rack demanding more fuel and at the same time the other line goes to the "actuator" activates the "solenoid" and throws the linkage forward thus moving the "wastegate"....the wastegate is a "door" in the exhaust manifold housing and when moved will divert exhaust gas away from the turbine preventing it to over-run but thus giving enuff pressurised air to the fuel rich cylinder to make it more effecient and producing more power.................... and that is what i was checking today................ ditchman
i have just been advised ....and rightly so that i have described the operation of the waste gate back to front !!..................... Should read..." as the pressure builds up in the compressor housing it is transferred down the actuator line and operates the actuator linkage which "STARTS TO CLOSE THE WASTEGATE ....NOT OPEN THE WASTEGATE" it would result in severe damage if it was the other way .............. ditchman
no more posting at the moment.....i have to wait for my pension to come in....and i have bought a mower of the internet...to get running and sell....it has been parked for 5 years at the back of a shed............. ditchman
well...we are back on trac' now picked up a 2nd hand block ...........what a bit of luck....just before it was replaced with a 200tdi...it was bored out to +0508....20thou....and had only done a 1000miles.....i slipped one of my new pistons in and it is tight....so i will get my bore honer/glaze buster on it once it is nice and clean and settle the pistons in one by one and marked then ready for assembling......... just waiting for a cople of mates to turn up with a sack barrow so i can wheel it around to the "situation room"......as you can see there is no wear lip at TDC...... ditchman
the bous turned up and we manhandled it to outside the kitchen backdoor...where my washdown area is situated...popped it on a cople of bits of 2"x2"......and i sprayed it with some gunk and will now leave it to soften overnight, before i wash it off..........so that is more or less the bare block...the only things that came with it is the piston oil squirts and the matchings journal caps....if they arnt there the block is scrap as these are matched to the block when it is line bored..........
