Eley Hymax & Alphamax.

Recommended Posts

The system of case colours was well thought out and practical ! That is totally out of fashion these days .

I used quite a lot of Eley Super Game 1 1/8 oz until I bought a case and discovered they too were loaded in black cases. This

would be late 80`s or early 90`s I think.

I would give my right arm for a box of those :)

There will be a packing code in the innerflap of the box. This code tells you the exact date that the cartridges were packed. If you send me the code I will have a look

Believe it or not, these are actually a quite unusual in an orange case... the first plastic cased Hymax were loaded in a red case and from 1974 they were loaded in a green case....

Impax 7s were the 'go to' cartridge for driven game shooting back in the 60s 70s and did the job in spades. Now you are expected to have barrels 34 inches long with extended chokes and shoot cannon shells. :-) I'll stick with my 410 thanks :-)

I have some old cartridges still. I'll have to have a look. I gave a lot away a few years back. I'll see what I have and first person at the back door can have them. :-)

Never ought to revive an old, nay ancient, thread from nearly five Prime Ministers ago! But what ho!

Smooth blue plastic case, low brass, headstamp ELEY-KYNOCH 16. Shot size English #5. Box lid says Gauge 16, Chamber 70mm 2 3/4", Load 32g 1 1/8oz. Back says not to be used guns proofed less than 1 1/8 oz or service pressure less that 3 1/4 tons. Came with some 16 bore Eley Grand Prix from an "old boy" one of which had date Nov. 1975 on inside flap in biro.

AAA are one of the only two deer legal sizes allowed in the UK for taking certain deer on enclosed land where serious damage is etc. etc.. It was also a popular "man killer" in the Malayan Emergency so I was told. Which may be correct or may not be! I was told my horpscope once but just because I was told it also that didn't mean that was true.

AAA 5.1mm 37 pellets per ounce 12.5 grains weight per pellet (lead)

I shot a load of them a couple of years ago I found them in my shed they where put in boxes when we moved up to wales the steel had gone rusty but I thought let’s try them .I was going out on the crows a couple of days later so thought I would see what they where like after all these years I didn’t have many complaints from the crows they where still as good as when I brought them back in the late sixties

Thanks for that, I couldn't remember when I bought them, but I know it's a good while back. Had these about the same time as well I think ?

Love seeing these old carts! I have a small collection, Got a whole box of those Rekord carts, and a few Alphamax and Hymax of various ages.

When I was a lad in the early eighties me and a mate would scour local shoots for empties and I had hundreds!  As soon as I got my ticket at 15, they were all binned - what a shame!!

These are definitely from the mid 2000's onwards going by the print on the cartridge. I would say any time between 2006-2012 would be about right

Got my fair share of these in the cupboard in various shot sizes along with about 7000 other random 16g cartridges 🙂

Could anyone tell me what the difference is between these two 11/4 oz loads ? Was it velocity ?Other than case colour and head height the boxes don`t really give any indication !

Thanks.

This is a copy of Eley leaflet from about 1970,
