Thinking of throwing in the towel

I let my shotgun and firearms license run out in 2007 due to getting bored of it, land diminishing and getting into carp fishing. In 2012 I decided to get back my shottie and when FO came round I explained the cabinet is still in same place and nothing's changed and he said it's just a Renewal then and went away happy. I would think hard about giving them up as I wouldn't do it again as it's always nice to have them there just incase an opportunity arises. I don't have any land anymore and I'd like land obviously but it's my own fault as I don't go around asking but I have a few clay shoots a year and a few of us from the village go on a rough/vermin shoot that is organised by one of them and we have 5 shoots over the winter, it's a more the merrier shoot and end up having half a dozen plus. Don't do it! :-)

Make sure your certain.i did it once and kept hold of my licence (big mistake)only to go out and spend a few grand on new gear. Then realised I didn't want to continue,so gear got sold cheap as chips to an RFD because I wanted it gone all together and ASAP to save me changing my mind yet again. The minute the guns where picked up I already had a letter of surrender in an envelope with both my FAC/SGC, and dropped them in that day.Oddly I am happy that have all gone & the surrender means I can't change my mind.On the plus side it's nice to have a nice clean truck.

955 i would certainly think twice as there are always alternatives. in the last 15 months i myself have lost a couple of permissions due to larger shoots increasing their size. also have just gone back to university for last 10 months on top of me job and bee super busy and have not done anything on the shoot i have helped out on for the last two years. what i have done this year i have paid for stalking days got booked and looking at some other paid pursuits. still managed to get out for some pigeon shooting this year and vermin, still got a couple of small perms. if cashflow is short i am sure if you keep on something will turn up. as said on here before may be harder to attain again in the future. do anything, air rifle, shotty, fish, get knocking on dem doors!

Not sure wot type of shooting ur into but there probably has never been so much affordable shooting about ever.

And even with net should be easier to find shooting around u, althou going into the local gunshop is still the best way.

Wether going to clays or small mixed bag pheasant days or shooting for gundog days, which is usually very good value plus u get to see dogs work.

Even in derbyshire get urself beating on a moor or 2 and get invited for a few days of driven grouse. Cannae beat it

Amazing wot u can pick up now.

Depending if u can be bothered with the drive u can come up to our syndicate for a day, its nowt fancy thou,

If u only have shotguns no need to provide reasons or prove use, like almost another has said if u don't need the cash no point in selling as u will never gt ur money back

Keep your licence and guns and take a step back from shooting, give yourself space to breathe. Things may change in the future . I'm more or less in the same boat at the minute . zero time because of family and land is nigh on impossible to get around Chesterfield and clubs here are harder than that. Farms I used to shoot have changed hands and syndicates have moved in . The land I've got left is VERY small but I'm thankfull for it . times will change so just hang in there bud.

Hang fire, we will soon be launching an online shooting club directory that will show all places to go target shooting, all being well it should be up and running around Christmas time. Also, in Spring we will be writing to all our clubs and syndicates to ask if they have any vacancies and these will be added to the GoShooting BASC site here: http://goshooting.org.uk/

I find I would rather go to the ranges and spend a morning playing around developing loads or shooting 40-50 rounds at 600 yard target. Then back home and get on with the rest of my life, which is very busy. You have to taylor what you do to what is achieveable.

i get invitations to go foxing in Wales and thats a night out I enjoy now and again but I couldn't afford the time to maintain a few permissions

Agreed, moved here 9 years ago, bumped in to the local shoot one morning while walking my dogs. Jumped on the trailer and the rest is history. Have pretty much free, and sole rein over at 4 farms, keeper a productive shoot, and have shot and gone beating over 3 counties, all through people I met on that trailer. And 3 of the people I met are now my daughters god parents! So get out their and make friends and contacts!

Beating an be a very productive route into more shooting - my two syndicate memberships came from this source. I've had to pull back from a lot of this at present - sick/dying in laws, son with cancer etc etc - but know when we've buried a couple I can throw myself back into the sport again through the beating route. It's what keeps me going at present.

The road into shooting and gaining permissions is to go beating. Not only will it give you a foot in the door on the places you beat but you may be surprised what you can glean during a lunch time chat.

Blackpowder

:good: Couldn't agree more. Have said this many a time. It has opened more doors ( or fields ) than any cold calling will ever do.
