Burnsy1
I've just purchased my first shotgun. An Aya no 4 choked 1/2 and 1/4. Just wondering which cartridges everyone finds best for side by side? I've got some 28g no 6 to try out on the weekend. Thanks in advance. bakerboy
Before you choose, ensure you get the correct Chamber length. Side X Sides often have a short chamber. Safety first. Apologies if you already know.
Whitebridges
Mine has two and a half inch chambers and it shoot well with 28g of Hull Imperial Game No 6 felt wad. Edited February 18, 2016 by Whitebridges
Blackpowder
SxS are generally lighter than other configerations. My three vintage side by sides shoot happily with most brands of 2 1/2 that is 65mm cases with 28gram and fibre wad. Blackpowder
mudpatten
Something around the 1 ounce mark should fit the bill. Sorry, but I have`nt gone metric. Your AYA number 4 has 2 3/4" (70mm) chambers and is modeled on a 1950`s Birmingham made English boxlock ejector. As such it is fairly light in weight and you`ll undoubtedly find it more comfortable to shoot with the likes of the 1oz. Eley Impax than anything significantly heavier. Rimfireboy
I use impax and hi-flyer mostly in my 2:3/4 inch sxs.
Burnsy1
You are spot on it is 70mm. Had to double check for a moment. Thanks for the advice. Looking forward to shooting it.

ElvisThePelvis
28g Dark Storm in 6 (uk 5) are as heavy as I go through my Aya no3 or Aya Centennary (30g feels a bit too much, especially through the Centennary) Hull imperial game 28g no 6 (as above) are a very good shout, I understand that Gamebore Regal Game are nice through SXS too but haven't tried them. If looking for something cheaper then Gamebore Clear Pigeon 30g of 6 are fine through my no3.
figgy
Try a few different types as its how it feels to you that counts. I have put 36 gram through a SxS and it felt ok but a different brand 30g kicked like a mule. Lyalvale Supreme game 30gram of 6 is a nice cartridge to see how you get on. Westley
Depends on what you plan to shoot. Most of the above cartridges are classed as 'Game' cartridges and as such carry a 'Game' price. If you are going to shoot clays then something like a 28 gram, 7 1/2 shot, Hull Comp X is not a bad cartridge with low recoil. The same load and shot size with a fibre wad will also kill pigeons within reasonable ranges. Eley have just introduced an 'Imperial' load, loaded for them abroad, selling at around £135/1000 and Gamebore Kent are doing a 28 gram, plastic wad, at a similar price. The amount of times that I have seen written " kicks like a mule ECT. I have never had a problem with felt recoil and I wonder if those who do should practice correct gun mount to make sure that the butt is positioned correctly in the shoulder pocket. Mostly the cartridge of the day were 1_1/16 >> 30grm for general shooting, 1_1/8 >> 32grm for a bit more punch and 1_1/4 >> 36" grm such as Alphamax for a few wildfowling. I must agree that I would only like to shoot a handful of Alphamax. Borrow a few from friends or buy a random selection of boxes to try out. if you are a good shot and put the lead on the target 28grm will be OK and take down most of what you are likely to encounter. Yep, too short a stock and it will 'run' into you as opposed to all together moving back as one.
casts_by_fly
For a light SxS the Hull Cartridge Imperial game is the softest shooting 1 oz game type cartridge I've seen and it perfect for putting through a SxS. I don't know how they get 1 oz at 1400 fps in a short case to be so nice, but they really are. Through a heavier O/U they shoot like a 410 it seems. For a practice clay cartridge (should you like to shoot clays with that gun) the 21g Comp-X 8's will break any target you're going to be shooting at in that gun. Incredibly light in recoil they are my choice regardless of gun or game on clays. (Thanks Clayman for putting me onto them years ago). thanks, rick
Milo
It depends how they pattern for you but I have used Gamebore Super game Hi Bird as a default side by side load in my Arrizabalagas as they are slow and smooth. Found that 28g 7s were fine for most applications but that 30g 6s didn't recoil much more when required. I would avoid higher velocity stuff as I have found no real world improvement in performance over the softer cartridges to justify the extra recoil. Suppose it has nothing to do with progressive burn powders or fast burning powders. Or how recoil sensitive you are. I have been shooting long enough to know how to mount a gun and what fits me. Yet I find non progressive powders kick me and heavy loads with a slow burn don't. Agree about fit and mount but it's not always the case. Be thankful you don't suffer recoil issues. My choiropractor has explained to me why I feel recoil due to old shoulder and neck trauma. I can take the shove of a slow burn but the quick slap of a fast burn hurts as my shoulder don't move back like it used to. Hold your shotgun on your hip bone and fire it you will feel recoil. Guest cookoff013
its to do with the whole cartridge, not just the powder and progressive / digressive powder burn. i loaded 24g steel super slow powder, and an ultra quick powder 24g lead. both got the same speed, both recoil the same. loads kick because the projectile goes fast. more fast, recoil more ! maybe some of you guys should stop believing whats written on the side of cartridge boxes. its often rubbish any way

figgy
You can still get them. I use 25g no6 lyalvale cartridges in my Damascus SxS and Hull Imperial game 28g no5 later in the season. Both smooth shooting but I prefer the Lyalvale.

IEH
Just to add another view, I like Express Supreme Game in 28g and find these softer than the Hull Imperials. I can even shoot the 32g Supremes comfortably in my game gun, in complete contrast to RC Sipe which, though a great cartridge which I use in heavier guns, are downright nasty in this gun. My second choice is Gamebore Super Game, as recommended by Milo.
