Do you realise?, It was on this day in 1957 that five countries signed the Treaty of Rome to create the Common Market. I wonder if they ever could have foreseen what it would turn into

I do believe you are right

They knew exactly what it would turn into, their aim always was political and monetary union as well as trade.

Posted this in the other thread as well as it seems applicable to both. (delete one if not ok)

Just hope this brexit isn't just a big con. Doesn't seem to be a lot happening regarding getting folk on side. Wouldn't surprise me at all if it ends up as a damp squib then the leaders (farage - Bojo etc) just toddle off to some comfy job for life, sponsored by the EU.

in

Why?

In.

Why?

As much as I dislike some of the workings and limitations of the EU I do want a close working relationship with the rest of Europe. I'm undecided which way is the lesser of two evils as both have their drawbacks.

IN would mean a ratification of the EU and all it stands for so I worry about any acceleration of political unuion that could result.

OUT would mean almost certain break up of the UK and an unnecessary and costly re-evaluation of our trading and financial position in the world.

I'm currently swaying towards in, but it's too close to call.

Mikhael Gorbachev is quoted as saying that the EU is trying to reconstitute the soviet system in Western Europe! He should know............

Biggest problem is funding to campaign, the in camp will have government and eu backing, the out wont. We had flyers the other day asking for help and volunteers, also ways of fund raising.

Al Jazeera Head to Head - Europe: Is the Union over?

Viviane Reding, the former vice president of the European Commission, on austerity, democratic deficit and Ukraine.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=liLeHHFwDM8

If you don`t want to watch the entire thing, just go forward to around 32:50 where the audience member asks whether Cameron will be able to renegotiate Britain`s terms with the EU.

Worth watching all of it though imo as the host doesn`t hold back from attacking either side of the debate.

The other rather telling part is discussing the Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty where Viviane admits they were happy to go with the second vote result but has little to say about ignoring the initial result.

Al Jazera is rapidly becoming the most accurate, balanced and factually reliable news channel on my TV. I could never have imagined myself saying that as I regarded them initially with deep suspicion but they have started to really win me over now

My biggest issue with the IN campaign is that so far it is all shock tactics to make everyone afraid of leaving, there have been very little in the way of actuall facts to say why to stay, instead its ooooo this WILL happen if we leave... No one knows what will happen... One things for sure, staying in wont make it any better....

My biggest issue with the Remain campaign is that they are all 'on message' claiming that "The UK would be stronger in a reformed EU". Yet the don't seem to want to explain how the EU would suddenly be 'reformed'. Cameron tried and failed. So who or how is the EU to be 'reformed'?

Interestingly the French and Dutch voted against the new EU Constitution in 2005. In France 54% voted to keep the EU and French constitutions separate. What happened?

Although this rejection and the similar no-vote in the Dutch referendum seriously damaged the Constitution, subsequent EU Presidency holders have vowed to keep it going.

Sarkozy was elected President of the French Republic in May 2007. Amongst his pledges was a re-negotiation and ratification of a mini-treaty without a referendum. Eventually, the new version of the text, the Lisbon Treaty, was voted by the Parliament.

On the internal political scene, the success of the No did not have the expected effect on the political landscape. Begrudged by the members of the Socialist Party for his divisive role,

The Dutch voted 64% against the EU Constitution yet it was still accepted by their government.

I don't know if it's just me ,or has any one else noticed that the news media especially the BBC .have had no reports about so called asylum seekers in Calais or the channel coast since the referendum date was announced, before that it was shoved down our throats every night.wonder why

You don't have to wonder why, you have answered it perfectly and you are almost certainly right. The BBC would get grief from on high for showing it but they can't really be criticised so easily for not showing it.

This sort of thing happens an awful lot more than we probably realise.
