As much as I dislike some of the workings and limitations of the EU I do want a close working relationship with the rest of Europe. I'm undecided which way is the lesser of two evils as both have their drawbacks. IN would mean a ratification of the EU and all it stands for so I worry about any acceleration of political unuion that could result. OUT would mean almost certain break up of the UK and an unnecessary and costly re-evaluation of our trading and financial position in the world. I'm currently swaying towards in, but it's too close to call. Mikhael Gorbachev is quoted as saying that the EU is trying to reconstitute the soviet system in Western Europe! Biggest problem is funding to campaign, the in camp will have government and eu backing, the out wont. We had flyers the other day asking for help and volunteers, also ways of fund raising. The other rather telling part is discussing the Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty where Viviane admits they were happy to go with the second vote result but has little to say about ignoring the initial result. Al Jazera is rapidly becoming the most accurate, balanced and factually reliable news channel on my TV. My biggest issue with the Remain campaign is that they are all 'on message' claiming that "The UK would be stronger in a reformed EU". Yet the don't seem to want to explain how the EU would suddenly be 'reformed'. Cameron tried and failed. So who or how is the EU to be 'reformed'? Interestingly the French and Dutch voted against the new EU Constitution in 2005. In France 54% voted to keep the EU and French constitutions separate. What happened? Although this rejection and the similar no-vote in the Dutch referendum seriously damaged the Constitution, subsequent EU Presidency holders have vowed to keep it going. Sarkozy was elected President of the French Republic in May 2007. Amongst his pledges was a re-negotiation and ratification of a mini-treaty without a referendum. Eventually, the new version of the text, the Lisbon Treaty, was voted by the Parliament. On the internal political scene, the success of the No did not have the expected effect on the political landscape. Begrudged by the members of the Socialist Party for his divisive role, The Dutch voted 64% against the EU Constitution yet it was still accepted by their government. The BBC would get grief from on high for showing it but they can't really be criticised so easily for not showing it. This sort of thing happens an awful lot more than we probably realise.
