fenboy
A couple of weeks ago a new pigeon shooter Minime46 was asking for some advice as he was having a bit of a struggle getting to grips with pigeon shooting. I advised him to post his location so someone local could hopefully join him or take him out to give him a few pointers. As it turned out when he did give his location he literally lives 2 minutes up the road from me !. We swapped a few pm's and agreed to get in touch if either of us found enough pigeon to have a go at . Yesterday MInime46 ( Craig) managed a decent bag of 30 by himself on some barley drilling so clearly he is starting to get the hang of it !. He messaged me while I was at work last night to see if I would like to join him for another go today , I agreed although I must admit I was not hopeful of a good day with the field being shot the day before , but I thought I would still be able to give him a few tips. The field was only 5 mins from home and when we arrived there were no pigeon down but after watching for a few mins we started to see the odd one here and there . We set up in a dyke at the bottom end of the field where most of the birds seemed to be going across and set out 20 dead birds for decoys and before we had the hide up one or two had already dropped in , a decent sign that the pattern was ok ! Craig may be pretty new to shooting but I have seen far worse shots and he soon had one or two on the deck with the pigeon decoying fairly well although the did prefer to drop at the far edge of the pattern. I dropped the first few I shot at and they were added along with Craigs to the pattern , the bird continued to come in fits and starts with one minute pigeon everywhere and then a quiet spell. Craig managed to shoot several nice birds especially second barrel kills and even managed a couple of left and rights . I continued to shoot a few and miss some too , I must admit after not shooting pigeon since last september I was a little rusty . Birds came at fairly regular intervals until around 3.30pm when things dried up and we decided to call it a day. We finished with a very creditable 80 . I gave my young dog his first proper outing and was very pleased with him , he sat away from the hide and was nice and steady until sent for a retrieve , still a bit of polishing to do but all good so far. I did a bit of filming but to be honest with a flat remote battery I was faffing around too much with the camera and it was costing birds so most were not captured , also my editing skills are poor ! but I will add it below with a few pics from the day . I think we certainly have a new shooter hooked ! Edited April 11, 2016 by fenboy

Minime46
Was my favourite day out shooting so far, I really appreciate all of the tips you gave. Shooting with someone with experience is invaluable. I hope you didn't mind all of the different questions I kept firing at you. :-) Your golden lab is such a nice dog and tries really hard, you are doing a great job training him. I look forward to another days shooting with you in the near future :-) (maybe hit the 100 mark)!!

I did not mind all the questions at all , you were a good pupil and were obviously keen to learn , hopefully now you have a better understanding of the decoy pattern etc you will soon be getting some good bags , shooting wise I have seen far worse and it will improve the more you get out and you will be making the most of your opportunities

JDog
A good story and pictures. A mutually beneficial arrangement. There must be some birds about to shoot so many after they had been shot at the previous day.
