WelshMike
Since the weather is good and the rest of the welsh foxing contingent on Pigeon Watch seem to have retired I thought I better get back out last night. I headed over to one perm which is about 350 acres as I saw a couple of foxes there last week. Quick look on the one side of the farm, nothing about apart from a few bunnies and a couple of hares. Back across the lane over to the main patch of land, into the second field and caught a flash of eyes. Over to the NV and confirmed that they belonged to a fox. Field is flat and fox was about 250 yards so a bit far off the sticks. Fox wouldnt come to any calls and headed off through the bottom hedge. Quick dash to try and intercept worked and I managed to get a prone shot in the gateway of the next field which has a nice slope as a backdrop. Fox stopped long enough for a shot in the corner of the field and took an 80 grain soft point across the chest and out a little further back which made a bit of a mess. Shot was about the 170 yard mark. Nice vixen. She has had cubs but wasnt suckling them so they will be on solids. I have a good idea of where they are (1 of 2 places) and I will try and catch up with them in the next few days. The biggest issue is that the copse where I think they have the den has a wheat field one side and a silage field a couple of weeks off cutting on the other side so not easy to see what is going on. May go and sit out one evening with the shotgun. Hopefully this may encourage the dwindling number of PW members who post about shooting foxes to post some foxy antics as I am starting to feel a little lonely. Cheers for reading
maxwell
Mike, a temporary high seat in the copse? well done on the vixen and good luck with the cubs.
WelshMike
Mike, a temporary high seat in the copse? well done on the vixen and good luck with the cubs. Cheers bud. Not a bad suggestion but I would have to spend a couple of weeks clearing all the trees as the copse is slightly "unkempt". I will go and sit in the nettles and hope for the best. I know that there are a few more foxes about so the cubs will be looked after. They have a few dead crows not far away to keep them fed as well. kingsy18
Been out last three nights on the trot, been to mown fields, cleared fields seen absolutely nothing, been one of the quietest years i,ve had for foxes.Think all the rain we had over the winter done a job on them. Sorry to hear that mate. I have been surprised how many are about on the ground I look after though I have taken on a ruck of extra land. The farm where I shot this one I took on March last year and shot 21 foxes there in 2015. I have already shot 5 vixens and a dog there this year and there still a few about. Where abouts in West Wales are you bud?

WelshMike
Excellent Mike, well done. Cheers Steve. How are you finding your NV? I,m just outside Carmarthen, got about 1500 acres of shooting land ,obviously don,t go round it all in a night but i,m missing them somewhere, went up to Lampeter one night last week farmer said he had fox problem seen nothing. They are canny animals thats for sure. There is nothing worse then a problem fox as you have time pressure and they seem to be old and wise enough to avoid you. i had one farm in 2014 just after I took it on that lost 6 lambs in 10 nights . I was out for 4 hours a night for 15 nights and had no luck. Had a good session on the farm during mating time (for the foxes just to clarify) early in 2015 and shot 10 foxes. Since then problem sorted. Unfortunately despite foxes showing a degree of predicable behaviour there is still a fair degree of luck involved in it all. ditchman
you will see the fox count posts increase when the harvest starts..........its very difficult at the moment getting a bead on a fox when there is so much cover around with the corn. WelshMike
you will see the fox count posts increase when the harvest starts..........its very difficult at the moment getting a bead on a fox when there is so much cover around with the corn. I think the rest of the fox shooters are not putting in the effort There are still tram lines in corn fields.... My comment kind of relates to the apparent departure, or lack of willingness to post of a number of the PW members. Guys like Eccles, Underdog etc (this is not a criticism of these guys by the way as both are top guys). I hope this isnt a flavour of things to come. tonker
WelshMike, well done on the vixen! To me any fox is a shot no matter what time of year, I've hated the things a ever since they came during the day and took my chickens when I was a kid. I've changed my phone, an upgrade from the kids but since I've had it the pictures are always to big to post, I've had 22 in the last 3 1/2 weeks, mainly on cut grass with the photon. As for lack of posts, to be honest I think your face has to fit here, some times you may have 300 views for a couple of replies. some others may have 100 views and 20 replies with both posts being on the same topic, makes you wonder if it's worth it! I must add though that you nearly always replied when I used to post pictures

I have to save my pics to photobucket to get the size down and then I can post them on here. WelshMike
Another great shot and post. I like the set up on the rifle too. Makes a change from late nights Cheers bud. The set up seems to do the job but as all my shooting is on foot and I am a skinny bloke my poor little arms and shoulder get tired To be fair the rifle is bang on accuracy wise so i wouldnt change it. How are you getting on with the rifle side of shooting yourself mate? nice one mike you certainly put in the work to keep on top of things down your way . Thanks mate. I was a bit of a fool saying yes to more ground earlier this year so have ended up with a bit more then I can cope with at the moment. I am reluctant to take anyone out with me as I have recently had my fingers burnt with a couple of guys so will have to try and muddle through until I can get on top of the rabbits on one farm and the foxes on 6 others. Fortunately I seem to be dealing with the problem foxes so fingers crossed this will continue. good shooting sounds like people are shooting good numbers. still not seeing many here shot the odd few but did see first cubs last week. Thank you kind sir. I shot my first cub earlier this week and have a few den sites around the place that need dealing with. A mate of mine is coming down in August so I need to make sure I leave some for him to shoot.

There is no sport in the way I clear foxes, as said before superb looking animal, but disliked by me.

I dont think there is much sport in the way most of us control foxes, the fact is that accurate rifles, NV, stealth etc are used to ensure the fox is killed make it all unsporting. If we wanted to give the animal a chance we would be sticking to bows and arrows As I said, well done on the numbers and keep up the good work...oh and get back to posting

Patrol
Just got in from a foxing night 3 adult foxes with the .222 didn't see a cub in 700 acres, given a third of it is either arable or long hay grass amazed we found those three Little bit of rain tipped down around 11 pm for just an hour, just enough time for a cuppa and a bisqwuit then back on it Really good night out see 5 in total mainly on working some cut silage for mice and voles in three seperate fields, now the lambs have grown up a bit very little sightings there for foxes ( make the shepherd happy ) Patrol

We dont want it to be to easy or it would be boring I am lucky on a couple of my permissions as they cut the silage 3 times a year so I dont have as long to wait for the grass to be at a sensible height.
