Tedly47
Evening all hope everyone's ok. I haven't done much shooting of late due to work commitments and family life and the days I have managed to get out haven't produced much! From some of my earlier pic posts you might be aware that I shoot along with my good friend browning123 from this forum (MrB) and that about 5 months ago I gained a new perm, when MrB and I went to the perm for the first couple of times it was clear that the area had been shot hard even though the keeper told us that they haven't been shooting any pigeons!! Well on Thursday I went for a wander down to a rape field which I know the birds have been feeding on, there was a failed section at the top end of the field and as I drove up the track about two hundred birds got up out of the field and the couple of trees in the hedge line, so I parked up and watched for about an hour, in this time they were coming back in dribs and drabs but that was good enough for me and a quick call to the keeper and MrB and a date was set for Friday morning... I put all the kit in the car the night before so we were all ready to go in the morning, at 930 I picked up MrB (I was 30mins late due to the good lady!!!!) and off we went down to the field, as we drove up the track a good number of birds got up so we quickly got set up under a tree in the hedge line, it was nice a thick with leaves which was good as it looked like it was going to rain! Here's a pic of the hide. This was taken later on at the end of the day when the sun was directly on us, at the start of the day the sun was behind the tree so we had great cover..... I usually have ten or so birds in the freezer ready for days like this but not this time I had three, so we set up with two real birds on floaters, two fake floaters and a bird on a cradle, there was a fairly good wind coming from right to left which was making the floaters work well and as soon as we were sorted in the hide birds started to come in. Pic of the set up. Well the first bird came in and MrB missed it, ha ha the banter began.......? The first bird dropped to my .410, then MrB dropped a bird and I got another two with the .410 one of which was a great high crosser at least 35 yards away, it was stone dead in the air and proves that the little .410 can drop the birds if the leads put in the right place! Well after the first hour we knew we were going to have a good day, MrB and I have both had big days before but this was before we knew each other and a decent bag has eluded us while shooting together! Well the day went on and the banter continued, we had some great shots on high birds and we both had a mare on others, we are both safety conscious in the hide and have been shooting a long time so we are happy both getting up and shooting at the same time if there's a few birds coming in, it goes without saying that MrB only shoots his side and likewise for me, we had several pairs like this... Well we finished on a respectable 76 and two crows (can't forget them) for 120 carts and the banter hasn't stopped, even today he's texting me taking the Micky!!!!!!!!! So our first personal best while shooting together and "it's about time" we had a good day...... Unfortunately 15 birds were lost in the high standing rape behind us, I did manage to find four but it wasn't worth damaging the rape that we were trying to protect, shame losing the birds though we had to let easy birds go in the end as we would never found them. Here's a pic of mr grumpy smiling at the end of the day.....? And one of me!!!! Guns used on the day were, nordica 3 shot .410 (got the first bird) a carbon Maxus (mine) and a weatherby sa08 (was mine until I gave it to MrB for a silly cheap price) Birds were breasted and taken to my local in exchange for enough pounds to buy far more carts than we used, happy days..... All in all a great day with lots of banter.... Cheers Tedly Right it won't let me upload any more files!!!!!! Pics to follow...... Tedly47
Cheers gents, a long awaited decent bag day! Work and family have been hectic lately so it was good to get out! It was good to see my garage looking like the pro from PW, with all the birds laid out cooling..... I was trying to copy the great pigeon controller! browning123
It hurts me to say this - but a very good write up Tedly 😉 It's was a good day with very good shooting, the best shot of the day was the 35 yarder with your .410! 76 pigeons is an excellent bag for our part of the country, but a lot of credit goes down to your pigeon decoying expertise on the day.👍 Edited June 18, 2016 by browning123
