fenboy
The peas have not produced a single bird for me this season and three days ago they were vined . I went to have a look at the stubbles yesterday afternoon and was surprised to see good numbers on two different fields , one having around 400 pigeon and just as many crows on and the second had around 300 pigeon. The only problem was after watching each field for around 20 mins or so nothing else was coming to join them so it seemed they had been there a while before I arrived, I was unsure if such a situation would be worth a go but decide to go much earlier than I usually do this time of year so that I would hopefully get a trickle of birds as they came to the field . I got to the field around 8.30 and there were a few crows present , I set up for both pigeons and crows , something I hardly ever do , I had 15 pigeon decoys out front with a magnet and 6 crow decoys tucked into a corner . Things got of to a very slow start and I managed just 4 crows and four pigeons in the first hour or so . It started to get a little better as the day went on still slow but enough to keep me interested mostly pigeons with the odd corvid here and there. Unfortunately I shot like a muppet for the second time in a week , god knows why but I did . I ended up with 56 pigeon 11 crows and three jackdaws ( some of the crows were dropped in standing wheat so not in pic ).

motty
A good bag. I've never quite understood why pigeons often seem more attracted to pea stubble than when the crop was on the field.

marsh man
Lovely set of photos and Milo look in excellent condition , I was going to ask if any of your peas are cut yet as I haven't seen any pea carting lorries and by now the campaign would have normally started One pea field I go are only a few inches high as they were drilled when the ground was really wet and cold and the tractor driver was saying they got wet feet , what the technical term is I haven't a clue but I am sure one of our farming friends will know and tell us. This afternoon I set up on some barley that had a few pigeons on there when I arrived , by then the weather was nice with a fresh wind but as the afternoon wore on the heavy showers started and the wind got up , around 5 30 it started to thunder so I called a day and picked just over 30 . Any that fell away the decoys I took my young dog after, marking the spot and let him use his nose as he don't mark that well yet , having said my marking was hopeless at times as the dog often found one well off from where I marked it , a sign of old age that was creeping up have nearly got there . There was a good few pigeons on it and like yours this field has not been touched by pigeons since it was drilled A good bag you shot there and some great photos. I have had 5 fields cut marsh man , I have two harvest pea fields left but they are waist high at the moment. I am undecided if to shoot another field tomorrow , but after that unless I can find some laid stuff then that could be the end of my shooting until harvest. Sounds like your young dog is doing well and you had a nice little session .
