Out with a beginner

During the week I had a phone call from a friend who said she wanted to try pigeon shooting so we organised to have an afternoon at the weekend. Now my friend has shot plenty of clays before but as we know shooting pigeons is a different ball game altogether. We set off in the search for a decent looking field to shoot and after a couple of hours we came across a steady flight line of birds and followed it to a field of barley stubble. When we arrived there was a 4x4 pulling into the field, I've never seen this truck about before so was obviously one our summer time stubble shooters that appear out of the woodwork at this time of the year. He was know where to be seen during the cold months on the winter rape. I decided to follow the line back and intercept it over another field of barley stubble they where flighting over. Whilst we set up I could hear the other shooter banging away. Once in the hide the birds soon started to decoy and the other blokes shooting slowed down. My friend struggled at first but soon started to get the hang of it and dropped some good birds. If I was shooting on my own it would of been a 250+ bag but we managed to shoot 132 pigeons. I also shot some cracking birds with my new .410. We had a brilliant afternoon with lots of banter and hopefully another member to the sport

Sunday saw me heading out on my own and I didn't have a clue where to start. I started close to home and worked my way out. I checked farm after farm but found nothing worth setting up for. After a few hours and plenty of miles I found a field of rape stubble with about 500 birds down. The field was one of four in a big block of land. I chose my spot and had a few birds decoy but the majority weren't interested know matter what I tried. My main problem was birds feeding on the other fields. I could of done with a few rope bangers on them to keep them off the other fields. I ended the day with 101 pigeons.

Cheers

Ben

I've seen DB's face, no amount of money would make me swap!

Well done on the shooting, top notch.

I wonder how many of us will scroll up and down comparing faces, I know i did twice

Hi, mate.

Grand daughter, seen on here elsewhere as a tad tasty with the 22 LR. Wouldn't have been at all surprised to find out she'd been quietly having a bash at the clays so that the next time she came down it would be, "can we go pigeon shooting?"
