Gunnut
Looking forward to a days pigeon shooting on Monday, so decided to pack the car on Sunday to save time. Only took the bare minimum!!...Large canvass bag containing rotating seat with cammo netting inside... also rucksack containing head net, knife, folding saw, ear muffs, glasses, sandwiches, bottle of drink, packet of sweets, headache pills, plasters, midge cream, string, clamps for netting, driving glasses, bunch of keys for farm gates, etc plus a garden waste bag containing...12 pigeon decoys, 6 crow decoys, and one magpie decoy, with 19 plastic stands for decoys, boots, waterproof coat, just in case...plus 4 metal poles for netting, hammer to bang poles in " ground to hard " bag containing 250 cartridges, choke tubes, plus mobile phone, car keys, house keys, camera, shotgun certificate, gun went in has I went, started out at 5.30am 1 hour 20 minutes drive too farm, after humping necessary gear to favoured spot 40 minutes to set up, left at 3.00pm for 1 hour 20 minutes drive back home, result 1 crow. Now I'm an OAP and I must admit I staggered in doors completely knackered any advice too making my day simpler like it used to be,...a couple of decoys, a pocket full on Grand Prix 6s, shotgun, and a few cheese and pickle sandwiches, Or should I hang up my boots and call it a day. Any advice would be welcome....

yod dropper
As I'm restricted to walking the fields I've cut my kit right down to what I actually use and I might put some other kit in the car that might get an airing. I always have a look round for places I might want to shoot where I don't need the hide, even the stool, be it in a ditch or behind suitable vegetation. Fortunately the often more effective and much less bulky and lighter flapper has pretty much replaced the magnet. Importantly I like to be able to lug it in one go so it's gun in slip, game bag holding rations and cartridges and the decoy bag with everything else in and I've got it so it doesn't easily slip off my shoulders. The other important bit though is that I can keep myself relatively fit.

pigeon controller
Go with your minimum and leave the rest in the car , if you need it , fetch it . Just remember to have the bags to carry the pigeon off the field with you.

Good idea hawkfanz regarding the 20 bore, I changed many years ago to the 20 purely because weight for weight I could take more 20's than 12 bore cartridges but I then found it killed just as good as a 12 and I have never felt under gunned and use it on everything. Much of my ground is only accessible on foot so its always a trade off on what you take, the problem is carrying the shot birds back to the car. I used to think nothing of loading my kit on my back at the end of a successful day, popping 90 plus birds in a sack, kneeling down and grapple the sack on top of my kit then head of to the car.....now when I shoot a respectable number , my mind keeps saying "another 1lb to add to your back" ! JDog
When I have travelled light I have always regretted it when I have not taken my seat. In my case it is a very light three legged stool.

Daveyp
Has anyone thought of or tried to modify a golf trolley that you pull behind you to take the longer stuff I.e. Gun, magnet and hide poles I gave it a try last week and it was a lot easier than all the straps being around your neck. Yes I know before any of the negative comments start it all depends on the distance you need to travel and what sort of ground you need to get over. It worked for me. Davey. oldfeller
yep , tried that. with a few variations to hold gear . ok if you got very flat fields with no bumps otherwise dont bother, just another bit of junk to put in the truck, stick to lighterweight deeks, kitbag, lightweight nets. keep it simple . i carry lots in the truck and then just put whats needed on the day in and old army kitbag
deny essex
I spent a lot of the winter going through my mountain of kit, I carry all my basic kit including a seat, less poles and gun in a rucksack, total weight for the rucksack less flask n sarnies 18.5 Kg, I use modified FUD decoys to save bulk and weight. Batteries taken a small 2.4 pocket size for the flapper ( flapper was included in the bag weight) 7 Ah for the lightweight rotary with hypas taken if I feel the need and the same for the heavy duty rotary but with a 22 amp battery. Gun , hide poles and bouncer poles all carried in a fishing holdall. And I still get knackerd but nearing 68 to be expected I guess :(
