Russian Navy in the channel

Nothing exciting, they are fully entitled to use the Channel as a route to where they are heading.

The comments from the Royal Navy are first class - the Russians have to stop to re fuel - The RN do it on the move. The Russians have an ocean going tug as their aircraft carrier is want to break down.

Apparently we have two ships observing them on their journey.

And a couple of subs ;)

There's going to be some serious fireworks once they get to the coast of Syria given the combined firepower of the aircraft aboard the Kuznetsov and all those cruise missile ships heading down there.

Yup, world order changes, the west have been foolish and belligerent as goats.

Cue outrage from American military sources " their ship got near to ours and rocked it slightly "

" one of their planes flew agressively and the pilot was rude"

"we contacted them via radio and they ignored us, we plan to sulk for three days"

Cue Private Pike...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1HwKA0J-gU

It makes me laugh the way they go on about Russia they have every rite to go up and down the english channel its oppen sea and as for people saying that there ships are old and out of date we have two aircraft carrriers with no planes to go on them and four destruoyers with engines that keep on breaking down we have to get the french to patrol the channle as we only two small boats what a joke.

As they chose the channel route instead of the west coast of Ireland any Subs that accompany the fleet will be easily detected in the shallow water.

Seeing that the subs can detect a ship leaving New York harbour when of the coast of France, I don't think they will have any problem with this flotilla and could happily sit somewhere out in the Atlantic and listen to the conversations between ships. Open water, they can go wherever they desire out there. All the nonsense about Russian ships entering British Waters is whipped up by the media.

A question for those who live near the channel (forgive me, I live about as far from the sea as its physically possible to unfortunately).

Given reasonable weather, would would be the chances of seeing ships of this size transiting the channel from a vantage point on shore? If it is doable and they come back the same way I might head down to see it - it isnt every day you get to see a Russian fleet underway.

As an aside, it's interesting that someone mentioned the reliability of Russia's ships, in the sense that they have put to sea two of the main culprits for breaking down - Admiral Kuznetsov and the Petr Velikiy, at the same time. That says something about increasing Russian defence spending and confidence.

What I found fascinating was how close the 'shadowing' vessels are going.

If the US was sending an aircraft carrier and a fleet somewhere, do you think they'd let a Russian destroyer get within a few hundred meters?

Warships shadow each other all the time.

Given that the range of modern anti ship weapons is measured in hundreds of kilometers, it doesnt really matter if they are 100km or 100m once they are inside the weapon's envelope.

The Russians once went to sea to face the Japanese in the Russo-Japanese War. They sailed from the Baltic around the world via the Cape of Good Hope, to Manchuria only to get ultimately stuffed by the Japs. However, on the way, the Russians sank some British fishing ships in the North Sea, mistaking them for the Jap fleet!

For that reason, the Royal Navy must shadow the Russians to protect what's left of the UK fishing fleet...
