Would you pay to see your GP ?

I notice in todays papers that the BMA are going to discuss whether patients should pay to see their GP.

I have heard this before and a nominal sum has usually been mentioned, like £5-10 .

One of the Doctors supporting this has said that the fee should be "similar to what you would pay a Plumber, or Lawyer".

Now, that is more than £5-10 per visit.

I agree there are probably a lot of people wasting the Doctors time, but to make a charge so high it could put really sick people off is not the right way to deal with the problem.

It will just send more people to A&E and increase the waiting time there.

Not sure what the solution is.

I agree we need to find a way to stop missed appointments and weeding out halfwits that turn up at casualty in an ambulance because they splashed hot fat on a hand whilst frying an egg(yep sat in casualty waiting to be stitched up after an accident at work this happened) we already pay NHS dentists a nominal fee so why not a Doctor? considering the state of the NHS something needs to be done

perhaps you should pay a fiver when the appointment is made which you get back if/when you show up as arranged, obvs lose the fiver if your late/no-show etc

I am told that our surgery is always at least half an hour behind scheduled appointment times. I guess they look on "no show" patients as something of a plus.

Someone should point out to him/her for that you get a home visit.

Yep, and £10 back if you're there and on time and you have to wait more than 10 minutes.

Its a very slippery slope like proscription charges it started out as 5 Shillings I think now it if what £8 for something that half the time does not cost that much.

I have never seen a breakdown of why people miss appointments a lot of it is probably old people just forgetting people with mental drug or drink problems nothing is ever so simple as people just not bothering to attend there will always be a few but not that many.

do we really want to end up with a pay as you go American type system I for one think the NHS should be cherished the one good thing that our country has done.

I would happily pay to see my GP (even though i indirectly pay via my taxes and the such - but that is a separate issue).

I must admit i have not missed an appointment but i can understand why when on some occasions the earliest one is 6 weeks away!

In turn that puts pressure on the Hospital care system as people have no choice but to turn up (normally directed by 111 (or whatever it is this week)

The problem is - after chatting to a GP about this the other week, those who do use it to excess (requiring a prescription for paracetamol) or miss appointments are usually the ones who would be exempt from any terms of payment anyhow, so in effect those who pay in indirectly anyhow would again be subsidising double payments.

Our Surgery is open on Saturday AM for those who work during the week, as they cannot discriminate its full of OAPs and those who tend on the whole not to work during the week!
