North Sea becomes burden on taxpayers

Our North British cousins were keen to pocket the enormous oil revenues to fund their endless spending spree...

"The North Sea oil industry has cost taxpayers more than £300 million over the past financial year, becoming a drain on national finances for the first time on record, official figures show.

Taxes paid by oil and gas companies fell in 2016-17 because of lower oil prices, continuing investment and cuts in tax rates, according to the figures from HM Revenue & Customs.

Tax rebates issued to companies as relief on the costs of decommissioning and other expenditure outweighed the tax paid for the first time. As a result, UK government revenues from oil and gas production declined to minus £312 million in 2016-17, compared with £151 million in 2015-16, a report by HMRC shows.

The decline in North Sea tax revenues has been politically explosive, since the industry was at the heart of the Scottish National Party’s economic case for independence in the 2014 referendum."

Just an observation............

if the scottish referrendum had slightly gone the other way.............and the nuc's had been withdrawn from (effectivly) a now foreighn country....scotland paying their share of the national debt at a £5.00 /week....company HQ's moved to the south...as this is what happens as the HQ's need to be in the country where the main investor is....

scotland would be less well off than most 3rd world african countries....they would be totally and utterly ******......................

but surely they knew all this anyway as they are not stupid...as it was them (the scots) that managed the money of the british empire......i dont think they are deluded i think it is down to an all pervading...brain rotting deep seated hate of the english....going back to the wars between the english and scottish............

it is all visious deep seated total and utter hate of us......

am i wrong ?

It's hard to say how they would be! Everyone we speak to spouts off their cooked figures to meet their own agenda, it's an absolute nightmare!

I do laugh when we say how Scotland would be absolutely screwed, but then how great life is going to be outside of the EU 😂

Seems a bit hypocritical. Lots of scots are very socialist. It's a very different place to England.

If we "hate" the English so much why is it you struggle to find a local in any of the northerly towns? Most English folk have sold their two bedroom semi and moved up here and bought a B&B or hotel...

North Sea oil is a liability that Endland would love and that's why Westminster fights to keep the Union.

Having been born in Scotland and spent most of my life as a Scot, I honestly don't know of any one who dislikes English people, never mind hates them. Yes, there may be banter used but never any true ill meaning meant. Whenever there's any tragedy or incident down south there's nothing but empathy shown.

As for independence, I think the majority who want it believe in self governance, with the good bits and bad bits. Like the majority on this forum who want self governance away from the EU

dont get me wrong im not anti scots at all...............im just continually trying to fathom out why nearly 50% of scotland is so hell bent on becoming a seperate country.........fine if the figures stack up....then it is their right to be in charge of their destiny....but as it is i just cant weigh it all up......

many have asked N. sturgeon....how are you going to do this ...that ....other....but has she ever given a truthful honest answer to as ...WHY ?

Scotland is far too remote to ever be financially successful, that's part of its problem and always will be.

Absolutely great for holidays but not much else. A lot of the land is poor for agriculture and sheep farming is all but finished now.

Road and rail links are poor/slow in many places

Compare it to South Wales. South Wales is much better situated but house prices are comparable with Scotland.

South Wales has the M4/M5, I can be in London in just over two hours, or Birmingham or Cornwall. Manchester in about three. Plus they have Cardiff. For those who have never been, Cardiff is seriously good. Gower for beaches, Brecon if you like wild country near by, even Barry Island. Very good rail links too.

And there is a ferry link to Ireland. Fishing and shooting is much better in South Wales because its not all sewn up by the big estates and hotels as it is in Scotland

And best of all, they haven't got Nicola Sturgeon

Some sweeping generalisations there. I cannot for the life of me think of ONE reason i would move to London its a dump. I have stalking, shooting, salmon and trout fishing two miles from my front door and farmers are offering me shooting all the time. I have had 4 Mcnabs without trying too hard and the lassies are as fresh as the driven snow. If it wasn't for our national bird the midge even more Sassenachs would move up here.

PS the only thing i hate about Wales is that i have to drive through England to get there...

Probably my favourite accent in a female is Welsh for some reason.Obviously wouldnt refuse a bang off most females with any accent but the Welsh ones hit the spot like.

Oil companies have smart accountants and have huge overseas exploration expenses but we all know how much tax is raised at the pumps. There is not one single oil company losing money as they just turn the taps off till the price get them back to viable production.

Just today Statoil announced a 1500 jobs boost on a 30 year field so they must be pouring money down the well?

England has been spending the North Sea oil revenues for 50+ years and done nothing to earn it. It has been squandered and now Scotland is being blamed for being broke.

If Scotland had been allowed to keep its oil revenues we would be richer than Norway who set up an oil fund before exploration begun.

So dont come over all smug because the Yanks have massaged the oil price to ruin Russia and China.

No Britain has been spending North Sea oil revenues for 50+ years. That's because its our oil, by a treaty with Norway.

Apart from a couple of the small rigs its not in Scottish waters, The big oil fields are way out in the North Sea. This ridiculous myth that its somehow Scottish has no geographical or historical basis.

Just SNP propaganda to wind people up and create a sense of grievence. Scotland has benefitted at least as much as the rest of the UK
