seeker
The Optima barrels are around 18.6 / 0.733 and the Mobil barrels around 18.3/ 0.724 .... or , given Beretta tolerances, thereabouts. The Optimas are probably marketed as slightly overbored.
figgy
Anything over 18.3 18.4 is classed as back bored or over bored. So optima and optima Hp are back bored 18.6 18.7mm
saddler
Oh... Beretta!
Gunman
So if an old gun has been bored u to .740 for reproof its no longer "big in the bore " its now "back bored"? Great marketing wheeze wish I had thought of that years ago !.

If a new gun is overbored/backbored the manufacturer can control/maintain wall thickness....if an old gun .729 is bored out it reduces the wall thickness correspondingly!.......and eventually compromises safety! figgy
Gunman don't forget better patterns and reduced felt recoil, along with steelium for the barrels, if you believe the marketing hype some super metal. Because that couple of points of a mm work wonders. Funny that my fixed.choke 687 from the 90's and my Gunmark Garbi Royale don't seem to pattern poorly it kick me about. In fact I think the fixed chokes give better patterns. But that's far to old hat for the marketing people. Westward
Oh yes, "Steelium". Now there's a trick name if ever there was one. If you look at say, a 692, the barrels are clearly marked 'Excelsior HSA' steel which is exactly the same steel used for the barrels on every other factory built Beretta over many years. "Steelium" is in fact their buzzword for the cold forging process they use which is simply a cheaper way to make barrels than boring. They've been using that method for years too and certainly since well before "Steelium" made it's first appearance with the SV10s.

Next you'll tell us the pitting at the muzzles that goes straight through is actually an early version of porting
impala59
And rust is red blueing............well I suppose it is really
McSpredder
If there were major advantages in having a shot column slightly narrower than the bore, wouldn’t cartridge manufacturers start using thicker-walled cases, thereby reducing the internal diameter? Does anybody supply cartridges with a range of wall thicknesses, to suit different bore diameters? And if not, have the cartridge makers failed to spot a marketing opportunity, or might have they concluded that back-boring does not really make much difference to shotgun performance? Gunman
Next you'll tell us the pitting at the muzzles that goes straight through is actually an early version of porting Only if I could get away with it .Then again thats not so daft as some of the things I have heard and read . figgy
Any pitting just drill holes and call them gas vents for softer smoother shooting.
jasper682
Now all this joking aside, my DT11 is in fact the smoothest shooting gun in the world ever. Whether this is down to the eleven bore , I don't know.

Great marketing wheeze wish I had thought of that years ago !. Obviously a far too conservative approach ... if you're going to overbore you gotta go overboard and really upsize ...https://shotgunreport.com/2016/01/27/overbore-velocity/ http://www.chuckhawks.com/shotgun_mysteries.htm

If you want to go really oversize dont ask me Edited August 5, 2017 by Gunman
