evolution380
Will be collecting my new gun this weekend which is provided in a foam lined ABS case. Due to my house not being ideal for gun storage I'm going to be storing the gun at my father in laws in his cabinet which the FAO is fine with. He has a few shotguns and now and then will pop out with one on his land to clear off pigeons etc. return home and chuck it back in with his others, he's quite rough with his guns and I fear that mine would get dinged, scratched etc. He has quite a big cabinet so it could be stored in the ABS case in his locker but is this asking for rust/corrosions issues due to the foam liner? I'll be using the gun most weeks and they will be cleaned/oiled after each outing, will this be frequent enough use to allow storage within the ABS case? I can leave some of the silica gel sachets in the case and even the Napier VP90 anti corrosion sachets. OR Is permanent storage within a foam ABS case a big NO-NO? TIGHTCHOKE
It would certainly keep your gun safe and if put away dry and at a matching temperature to the cabinet and room, would not cause any condensation to form and start rusting. dougall
or keep it in a decent gunslip in his safe if that worried about it?..just don't put it in wet will be fine.
countryman
I keep my Browning in a leather motor case in the cabinet so as not to ding it. It has been fine.

saddler
I'm surprised nobody suggested using a gun sock yet! Or if the safe isn't the best one you've seen, double sock it just in case.... Edited August 8, 2017 by saddler
Graham M
I have seen a couple of guns that were left in a foam-lined case that actually went rusty. I think there is something in the foam that isn't conducive to long-term storage. Maybe they had been put away wet, but they were certainly rusty. Dekers
Gun socks are not ideal for ROUGH handling as the OP mentioned. Of course they help with protection but not at the same level as a gun slip or hard case. As for the foam issue, as already said, just make sure it is dry and avoid condensation. My guns ALL live in their slips in my cabinets, and if I was storing any in a cabinet with a heavy handed other user they would stay in their slips and not in a sock. billytheghillie
I bought some acoustic carpet and spray glue from the bay of evil, and lined my cabinet with it. No more dinks, plus I put my guns in socks

Cumbrian
I have seen a couple of guns that were left in a foam-lined case that actually went rusty. I think there is something in the foam that isn't conducive to long-term storage. Maybe they had been put away wet, but they were certainly rusty. They don't have to be put away wet for this to happen. Recently I was stupid and lazy enough to leave my Anschutz target rifle (clean and dry, I would have said) in its foam lined case overnight in the car (perfectly secure, by the way), the temperature fell overnight, and I didn't take it out until about mid-day on the next day, when I was shooting at Bisley, and after the case had been in the sun or at least the heat for a few hours: the result was an amazing amount of condensation on the barrel and elsewhere, positive drops of the stuff. I was mortified. It wiped off easily enough and Anschutz bluing is very good, but it was a chastening experience.
