Add detergent to the water to transmit the waves. It takes about 3 mins to degass the water before propped cleaning starts. Also use an appropriate detergent, aka brass safe or whatnot. Regarding about the water temperature affecting it working, I heat up some Birchwood Casey case cleaner in in the microwave, then use the sonic cleaner to clean the brass.
