Eyefor
If water expands when frozen ( a la caps being frozen off milk bottles on t'doorstep when t'war was on etc)...... ...WHY, if the polar ice caps are melting, are sea levels increasing and not doing the opposite - and decreasing? Just a thought. I'd be grateful if someone could stamp on this little maggot in my brain please. Thanks.
Townie
Because the water that was held in the form of ice turns liquid and flows into the ocean. Think of it in terms of when your freezer breaks down and deposits water on your kitchen floor times a few squillion.

Oh yes there is, it's down there, the ice sits on it and is up above sea level!
walshie
Half of the iceberg is above water. When it melts it's all in the water.
Old farrier
Just doing the experiment large gin& tonic filled glass with ice first right to the top ice above the rim I shall see if it overflows when the ice melts to make this a proper experiment I shall use 3 or 4 different kinds of gin and sises of glass This could take a while 😗😉😂 Living 200 feet above sea level I could have a waterfront property if it all melts Edited March 26, 2019 by Old farrier
Yellow Bear
Anything floating displaces it's own weight in water (simple law of physics) Ice floats so it has a SG less than 1. Therefore any floating ice will make tidily squat difference to sea levels. However the ice above a land mass will make a difference. ie land based glaciers, antarctic land mass, etc. however warmer air mass will hold more water vapour. IMHO many scientists and "specialists" are over egging the effect on sea levels to help pursue their own agenda (and keep them in a job) or is that just the cynic in me. Old farrier
Easy solution if the sea level rises in the Atlantic we can just open up the Panama Canal and it can go into the Pacific 🤗

As far as Eyefor's question goes - isn't it the ice on the Greenland land mass, which if melted, would significantly raise sea levels?
