wildfowler.250
So I’m sure this crops up occasionally but interested to hear what folk are using? Years ago I used to use express 28 g 6’s and thought they were really good. The last bunch of shells I bought were some gamebore pure gold of a similar weight and didn’t have any problems. Recently been using some hull shells,(going spare off a friend) and really not impressed with them. They seem quite slow as well? Anyway I’ve decided to put the Hull shells to clay use and order something else in. What cartridges are people having success with? Cheers! shalfordninja33
I'm using RC 26gm RC Sipes in no7 or no6 and RC JK6 in no7 through my Beretta 690. Light on the shoulder and do the business on the recieving end, I tried 28gm and heavier and felt a lot more recoil for little difference in the field. I have a 12 bore for heavier loads. Most of the 20bore users I shoot with use RC.
London Best
Always buy Express 25 gram in 7’s or 6’s for my English 20 bore which has 2 1/2 inch chambers and weighs 5 1/2 pounds therefore 28 gram loads kick like a ****** because it was never designed for them. wymberley
+1 for Express for the same reason, not so much the chambers but the gun's weight also 5 1/2 lbs.
mossy835
i use sipes good carts bit of a kick to them but hit hard,
wildfowler.250
Cheers guys. Use sipes in the 12 and they fair kick,(depending on which gun). Might go back to express then. Interested if anyone has any other feedback Thanks for the replies!
Dave at kelton
Been using VIP 28 gm but only because the local ground has nothing else. They seem to do the business.
Hignet
Just cartridges 28grm 6s loaded by gamebore very similar to original pure gold
wildfowler.250
Cheers! Out of interest, I’ve always used 28g. I’ve no interest in going heavier. But, is there much benefit in dropping to a 26g shell? I’ve never really found recoil an issue and tend to find a 28g 6 a good compromise,(I quite like a size 5 in 12g but aware of dropping the pellet count)? Any thoughts on cartridge weight would be appreciated!
London Best
28 gram is too much in any gun weighing under 6 pounds, irrespective of gauge size.

Hello, Why is that out of interest? I'm aware of the 96:1 ratio being a guide to gun/load weight/recoil but the OP is fine in that respect. wildfowler.250
Your standard beretta types are about 6 1/2 from a quick google? Cheers for the replies though, it’s an interesting way to look at it. I was thinking more along the lines of shot string or no real improvement in pattern
London Best
I am not in any way recoil sensitive but over nearly 60 years of shotgunning I have found the 96-1 guideline to be spot on. Any load exceeding this becomes ‘uncomfortable’ to fire repeatedly. This is my own experience. I was once given some 65mm 28 gram 20 bore cartridges. My 5 1/2 lb side lock jumped out of my shoulder with them. English 20 bore game guns were designed to fire 13/16 oz loads (23 gram).
wildfowler.250
Ah fair enough! It’s a silver pigeon I tend to use so maybe a bit more forgiving than on the shoulder
London Best
Exactly. If it weighs as much as a twelve bore should do, you can shoot twelve bore loads from it.
grahamch
I use Hull High pheasant 28g no 6 and find them a fine cartridge
albifrons
RCs 28g 6shot Beretta EELL 20g. Works for me.

gotgcoalman
used a mish mash through the little Beretta today. Fiocchi GFL 20 #6 Eley Grand prix #5 RC Sipe #6 All 28g fibre. They all did what was intended and I honestly couldn't say if 1 made birds "more dead" than the others. hawkfanz
24gram homeloads as good as anything ive ever bought.
Robertt
Used 28g 5's in my 20 bore all last season. Express Supreme, Hull H.P.E and Proper. All equally very good. Strangely the felt recoil is less than using 28g in my 12 bore although they are similar weight and fit. Must be some reason for this but I haven't worked it out yet? Perhaps the 12g cartridges are a tad faster?
matone
Yep,20`s have to be slower to keep pressure levels down.
billytheghillie
Don't see the point in buying a light gun and putting 28g through it. When I had my 20 bore I used 24g RC and dropped every pheasant and partridge that came my way. Remember, Its the nut behind the butt! I just don’t understand why folk buy a 20 bore and persist in using 12 bore loads through it. Or perhaps they don’t understand that they are actually using a 12 bore load? hawkfanz
as above thats why i load only 24gram fibre in 20g,
